Obituary for Glenwood "Glen" Matthews

Glenwood Matthews was born on October 31, 1934 in Atlanta, Georgia to the late Roshar and Mary Matthews. He was one of five children born to this union. Glenwood was raised in a Christian household and was a member of St. Luke A.M.E. Church.

Glenwood was educated in the Atlanta Public Schools System and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. Following high school, Glenwood went on to enroll in the United States Army.

Glenwood also studied carpentry. This trade served him well as he was blessed with a successful career in the construction industry, working for Herman J. Russell and Company. As a young man, he spent time playing baseball for the Rockdale Rawhides of the Atlanta Negro League.

Glenwood was truly a man who enjoyed life to the fullest. He was a member of the Modern Knights Social Club. In his spare time, you could find Glenwood chewing on a cigar, and watching sports, with baseball being his favorite. He also liked to keep up with world news, and travel when he could. Most of all he loved spending time with family and friends.

Glenwood had a wonderful personality and will be missed by all who were blessed to have known him. He leaves to cherish his memory, one son, Myron Matthews; grandchildren, Betraund Jones, Bretahn Jones, Myron D. Matthews, Phillip Morgan, and Andarious Hawkins; three great-grandchildren; sister, Georgia Roberts; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
