Hermina Grace Vargas, 86, known to all as Mina or Titi Mina passed away on Sunday April 8, 2018 at 11:25 am at the Regional Hospital in Scranton Pa. Mina was a resident at the Willowbrook Place in Clarks Summit, PA with her life partner of 50 years, Bonnie Jean Schroeder.
Mina was born in St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City on October 20th 1932. She attended Saint Columba Grammar School where she sang in the church choir. She graduated from Charles Evans Hughes High School in N.Y.C.
Mina worked for Prudential Insurance Company as an executive secretary for 30 years.
When Mina retired, she enjoyed more of life with Bonnie, travelling from state to state in their RV, stopping to ski, camp, hike and play tennis. Mina was an avid bowler and won several bowling championships. You name it she did it!
Mina invited her nieces and nephews on many adventures, they tagged along and loved their Titi Mina. Mina also volunteered in the hospital bringing joy to the sick. She enjoyed reading to the children, particularly those orphaned and abandoned children found a special place in her heart. Mina was so much fun to be around, but you didn’t want to get on her bad side as she was known to give you a swat. Mina’s departure is a great loss, but our memories of her will always be a great comfort.
Mina is survived by her life partner Bonnie Jean Schroeder as well as her youngest sister Aida Theresa Vargas (Terri) and her life partner, Judy Johnson (Newburgh, NY).
The next two generations of survivors include her nephews & nieces - Roy, Jeffrey, Diane, Karen, Robin, Charlie, Peter, Billy, Josiah, Jesse, Devin, Tara, Naomi, Lillian Jane, Adriana, Jeffrey Jr. Nicole, Toast, Lily Rose, Ayden and more too numerous to mention.
A viewing will take place on Sunday, April 11 from 12:30 p.m. – 2 p.m. at the Miller Bean Funeral Home Inc., 436 Cedar Avenue, Scranton. Prayer and reflections at 2 p.m. with Deacon Jan Mraz, from Mary Mother of God Parish. Burial services will be held in the Town of Ipswich, MA. Mina will be buried with her mom, Lillian Detres and dad, Nicandro Vargas. Several other relatives are buried in this cemetery including her sister, Lillian Mary Avelis.
