Obituary for Michael J. Altier
Michael J. Altier, 102, a resident of Clarks Summit Senior Living, formerly the East Mountain section of
Scranton for 52 years, died Friday April 27, 2018 at the Regional Hospital of Scranton. He was preceded in death by his wife the former Louise Olieo.
Michael was born in Mayfield, PA, son of the late Alexander and Antoinette Del Rocco Altier. He was a
member of Holy Name of Jesus Church, East Scranton, where he served on the fund raising committee
and as an usher and volunteer for spring dinners as well as other events and was a 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus. Following retirement from Altier Jewelers he volunteered at Moses Taylor Emergency Department.
He attended Longfellow grade school, North Scranton Jr. High School and graduated from Central High
School in 1933 and the University of Scranton, formerly St Thomas College in 1937.
He was employed by the A & P Company in the 1930's prior to moving to Philadelphia where he was
employed at the Philadelphia Ship Yards for 15 years as supervisor in the engineering dept.
In 1956 he returned to the area and joined his brother Joseph as a partner at Altier Jewelers. In 1961
Joseph and his wife Marjorie opened another jewelry store in Boca Raton, Florida. During the next 5 or
6 years Michael and his wife Louise operated the Scranton store until another brother, Leonard, came
into the business.
Michael and his late wife Louise enjoyed traveling across the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska,
as well as many foreign countries including Australia, Aruba, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Fiji Islands,
Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Venezuela and several cruises to
Puerto Rico, and both the Eastern and Western Caribbean.
He is survived by two sisters-in-law Marjorie Howell Altier and Anne Laurito Altier. He was preceded in death six brothers: Anthony, Herman, Joseph, Philip, Arthur and Leonard. Also six sisters: Alice Bonifanti' Elena Fabrio, Alvera Brennan, Angela Marzzacco, Florence DeFazio, and Margaret Ippoliti.
The funeral will be Thursday from Miller Bean Funeral Home, 436 Cedar Ave., Scranton, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Name of Jesus Church, 1414 Elm St., Scranton. Entombment, Cathedral Cemetery. Friends and family may pay their respects Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m
