Obituary for Susan McCracken (Stone)

Susan McCracken (Stone)
Susan Stone Story McCracken passed away April 29, 2018 at St. Vincent Hospital. She was born September 14, 1954 in Chester, MT to Alfred and Maxine Stone. Her father worked building bridges on roadways so the family moved often. After moving to Park City where she attended high school, she met and married Robert Story. Together they had three children, Carman, Tina and Zane and raised them on the family farm and ranch. Susan made breakfast for her kids every day before school and waitressed in the evenings. She became a licensed and certified EMT and truly enjoyed working in the emergency medical field.

Susan moved to Missoula and continued her work in the emergency medical field as a dispatcher before starting a new career with the VA Hospital at Fort Harrison in Helena. She later transferred to Billings to be closer to family and started working at the VA Clinic in Billings. While working there, she met Dick McCracken, a driver for the DAV. They married in 2009 and continued to live in Billings. They enjoyed traveling across the country and spent time cruising on the Harley or in their many Corvettes. Susan retired in 2015 and enjoyed spending more time with Dick before his passing on May 5, 2017.

Susan enjoyed gardening, traveling, and cruising in her red Corvette. She was rather particular about her hair and nails and faithfully kept her appointments to keep up with the latest trends. She had a weakness for shoes often boasting of her “shoe room”. She had a spirit that kept us on our toes, a great sense of humor, a bit of a stubborn streak, and was never afraid to voice her opinion.

She is preceded in death by her husband Dick, her parents, one nephew and one niece. Survivors include her three children and eight grandchildren; Carman (Robert) LaPlant, and their children Gabby and Kellen; Tina (Greg) Zimdars and their children Garrett and Stockton, and Zane Story and his children, Hayley, Kendyll, Wyatt, and Brody; her brothers Stuart Stone and Spike Stone and her sister Nancy (Mitch) Stone Hauge; several nieces and nephews and her dogs Olivia and Chance.

The family would like to say a special thank you to the staff at St. Vincent ICU for their exceptional care during her stay.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 8 at 10:00a.m. at Smith Funeral Chapel 925 South 27th Street. Dick and Susan will be buried together at the National Veteran’s Cemetery in Laurel in a small private family ceremony.
