Obituary for Charles D. "Chuck" Riley

Charles Daniel “Chuck” Riley Jr., 95, passed from this life into eternity on Friday, June 1, 2018 at the West Virginia Veterans Nursing Facility in Clarksburg, WV. Mr. Riley was born on February 13, 1923 in Crafton, PA, to the late Charles Daniel and Velma Coral Riley. His beloved wife, Natalie Byrd Riley preceded him in death in 2001 after 55 years of marriage.

Chuck’s family moved to Clarksburg in 1940 and he attended Roosevelt Wilson High School and was a passionate roller-skater. As others in the “Greatest Generation”, Chuck joined the Army Air Corp. with the 13th Air Force, 868th Bomb Squadron and served in the South Pacific during WWII, as a gunner and radio operator on a B-24s. He completed all 35 missions in Borneo, Java and the South China Sea area before returning home at the conclusion of the war.

Charles and Natalie were married on February 17, 1946. He was a devoted husband and father, and they attended Stealey Methodist Church. Chuck was employed with the Hope Natural Gas Company (Consolidated Natural Gas) until his retirement in 1985.

Charles and Natalie had four children: Diane Fitzpatrick of Warrenton, VA, Kathi Ambler of Middlebourne, WV, Janet Souders of Dublin Ohio and one son who preceded Charles in death in 2004, Charles Daniel Riley III. Charles is also survived by 14 grandchildren and more than 30 great- grandchildren.

Family and friends will be received at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home 329 E. Main Street Clarksburg, WV, on Friday, June 15, 2018 from 6 until 8pm. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at 11am with Pastor David Webb presiding. Interment will take place at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
