Melvin  Walker
Melvin Walker, 80, passed away on June 4th, 2018 in Chesapeake, Virginia. Melvin was surrounded by his loving family and friends. Melvin was born on November 4th, 1937 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Melvin served in the Army for a couple years in the early 60's, after his discharge he worked for the telephone company for 30 years and the Coast Guard for 17 years. He will be missed by many of his co-workers, who became lifelong friends and felt like family to him.
Melvin was a member of Great Bridge Baptist Church. He was comforted and cared for by the congregation and pastors of Great Bridge, and also by many friends. His last few months were filled with love and laughter and many visits by his friends and family. He was a person who just loved people, had a great sense of humor, and was a lot of fun. He lived his adult life in the Tidewater area and made many friends who were friends for life! His love of family extended to a number of people from the Telephone Pioneers, to his church life, to the neighborhood. He was a tower of strength to more people than can be named here.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, Carole Walker; daughters: Donna Blake (Chuck); Melissa Miller (Andy); sister, Patricia Rodriguez (Nick); sisters-in-law: Constance Walker, Judy Gateley; cousin, Howard Marshall (Delores); aunt, Ann Petersen; sisters-in-law: Donna Dambekaln (Andy), Brenda Zoby (Bill), Sandra Vaive; brother-in-law, Roger Jolley; nieces and nephews: Jerry Walker (Marie), Byron Walker (Mary), Carol Begarek (Tommy), Roger Everett (Verna), Laura Rodriguez, Charles Rodriguez, Ginny Rodriguez, Deann Walker and Stephen Yarbrough (Claire); three grandchildren: Waylon Blake (Bethany), Alex Miller and Sophie Miller; also his great-grandchild Cadence Blake. Melvin is also survived by 43 great-nieces and great-nephews all of whom showered him with love and gave him great joy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Virginia Walker; six siblings: Roscoe, Odell, Juanita, Marvin, Kenny and Bernie; his first wife, Imogene Walker; and his second wife, Phyllis Walker.
The Graveside Service will be on June 8th, 2018 at 10:00 am at Rosewood Memorial Park, 631 N Witchduck Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23462 followed by a Memorial Service at Great Bridge Baptist Church 640 Battlefield Blvd S, Chesapeake, VA 23322 at 11:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, Melvin has requested that memorial donations be made to LGS Foundation in hopes that research in the future will help his autistic grandchild, Sophie, and the many other people affected by this condition.
