Condolence: I am deeply saddened to learn of Mike's passing. As the Shuttle Landing and Recovery Site Manager at NASA Dryden Flight Research Center, I became acquainted with Mike through the Shuttle Mockup he led the construction of back in the Mid-80s. We used the mock-up through the end of the Shuttle Program in our Shuttle Landing traing scenarios with the DoD at Edwards AFB. While researching the origins and ownership of this unique asset, I was given Mike's name. I then found out that he was supporting the program at JSC. I called and talked to him. He was thrilled to learn that the mock-up was still in use. He provided me a CD with pictures photo documenting the construction of the mock-up. He also wrote an article on the construction of the mock-up. I thoroughly enjoyed our talks. I provided copies of the pictures and his article to the Dryden History Office and the Edwards AFB Flight Test Museum, where the mock-up is now located, so it's history will be known. Should any of the family want to see the mock-up, feel free to contact me by e-mail.

Condolence: It was my honor to know and work with Mike for nearly twenty years. He'd just retired when I came to DDMS the first time in 1991. He was part of the JSC LSO mafia and I was at Patrick as the "new guy." When I returned to DDMS the 2nd time, it was at JSC and Mike was still doing great space work with Medical Operations and Astronaut Rescue and Recovery. Mike was well-liked and respected by all. Even if you didn't always agree with him, you had to respect him as an honest professional. A great guy who will be missed by all his friends and colleagues. It hardly seems fair that he's missed so much of his well earned retirement. Fair winds, Mike Chandler!

Condolence: I met Mike while working on the Assured Crew Return Vehicle, and for three weeks I thought he was a NASA flight surgeon, he was so knowlegeable and so willing to dive into all the design questions - literally. We did water egress testing with him of the Lockheed design, and a very good vehicle ready when HQ cancelled the program. I’d have him on my time, or serve on his, any time!
