Obituary for Kate Wertheimer

Kate Wertheimer
Kathryn Lynch Wertheimer, 73, passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 21st, 2018. The daughter of the late Thomas S. Lynch and Kathryn Smith Lynch, Kate was born in New York City on April 6th, 1945. Her family moved from Massachusetts and Illinois eventually settling in Mountainside, NJ where she attended The Deerfield School. Thereafter, she graduated from Mt. Saint Mary's Academy and Boston College with a BA in History. Upon Graduation from BC she worked for the Codman Company in Boston and also held positions at The Rockefeller Group and the United Nations in Manhattan. In 1973 she met William Wertheimer, and they married one year later to the day on March 16th, 1974. They lived in Westfield, NJ for 44 years. In 1975-76 Kate worked as the Assistant General Manager to the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority during the construction of the complex. She and Bill had two sons William Lynch ("Boomer") and Thomas Liam. While on maternity leave from the Sports Authority after Boomer was born Kate soon volunteered her time to other endeavors. She was Special Events Coordinator for the Cancer Hope Network and served on the Governor’s Council on Child Care, the Commission on Sex Discrimination on the Statutes, the Child Care Advisory Council and was a victims' advocate in the Union County Courthouse for Project Protect on behalf of the YWCA of Eastern Union County. In 2007 and 2011 the YWCA and the Union County Board of Freeholders recognized Kate for helping victims of domestic violence. Kate was currently serving as a volunteer and on the Board for Mobile Meals of Westfield and had done so for years.

Boomer married Katie Egan and Liam married Katie O'Brien. They gave her 6 grandchildren for which she had unconditional love and pride: Mason, Graham, Wesley, Owen, Maggie, and Rory. She loved all things Irish, was an inveterate New York Football Giants fan and season ticket holder, loved Cape Cod, cooking and Broadway, but her passion in life was her family and friends.

Kate's wake will be held at The Dooley Colonial Funeral Home in Westfield, NJ between the hours of 3 and 7 pm on Sunday June 24th. A Mass for Christian Burial will be held at 10am at The Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church on Westfield Ave in Westfield, NJ on Monday June 25th. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a charity of your choice.
