Roy, Donald O. age 96, of Excelsior, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2018 surrounded by family. He is preceded in death by his parents, and 8 brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife Betty Lou; children, Mary Jo (Todd) Helmeke, Robert (Joleen), Daniel (Anibel), Donna Russell, Dave (Julie), and Kathy Smith; grandchildren, Todd, Michael, Nick, Angela, Joseph, Phillip, Brian, Katherine, Lauren, Christopher, and Tony; 8 great-grandchildren; and many other loving relatives, friends, and the church boys. Our father had the strongest hand shake, best sense of humor and the kindest heart. He loved golfing, bingo, beer, playing bridge, and his children and grandchildren. But most of all, our mother. He was a true war hero. He served in the Atlantic theater as a Navy Signalman aboard a LST. He participated in the Normandy invasion, making 40+ trips back and forth across the English channel. He also participated in Operation Husky; the invasion of Sicily. He represented well the 'greatest generation'. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held on Thursday, June 28 at 11:00am with a visitation beginning at 10:00am, at St. John The Baptist Catholic Church, 680 Mill St, Excelsior, MN. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. John The Baptist Building Fund.
