The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of M. Rex Utley can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Thank you.

Rex was one of the first people I met when I came to Utah in 1981 to build the Salt Palace Convention Center. He was working for Frank Child and Project Control, and was assigned as the chief estimator for the project. He made a gentile from the deep south feel right at home in Utah. We finished the Salt Palace on time, and way under budget, thanks in large part to Rex. Over the years, we worked on many projects together. When my firm needed assistance estimating a large project, he was always there to help. When he was at the University and he had a big job to estimate, he would call us to help him. Together, we estimated literally hundreds of projects over a 25 year period. Some of them were very large and complicated. They were some of the largest public projects in Utah. The Salt Palace, the Utah State Capitol, Rice-Eccles Stadium, the Marriott Library, the Salt Lake City Main Library, and dozens of projects at BYU, SUU, Dixie College and Utah State, just to name a few. Rex was one of the best construction estimators I ever knew. He was one of the very few people in the industry that understood all aspects and systems in a project, and could quantify and price them accurately. His work was thorough, and always spot-on. I enjoyed working with him and we made a good team. Rex-thanks for your help, the work you gave us, and most of all, thanks for being my friend. Rest in Peace. Ken Ament
