The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Richard Litke can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Thank you.

The lighting of a Memorial Candle not only provides a gesture of sympathy and support to the immediate family during their time of need but also provides the gift of extending the Book of Memories for future generations.

Saint Richard Litke

As a grateful student in Greek II and Hebrew back in the late 1960s at Walla Walla College/University, I was always in awe of Dr. Litke and am eternally indebted to him for his teaching, mentoring, incredibly subtle dry wit and humor, and genuine human warmth and compassion. I was also privileged to learn from him as his boss in the 1990s.

For someone like me majoring not only in theology but also biblical languages, there are few scholars in the world (maybe in the universe) as qualified as Dr. Litke to teach ancient languages. And fewer still who did so with such humility, knowledge, elan, and panache. And even fewer still who could instruct with as much passion for his subject and humor for his subjects. And yet even fewer still who were willing to teach Hebrew in the office of his little motel along Wallula Road when it became impractical for him to do so elsewhere. And none others who continued to teach from his home while working for me in the 1990s and beyond.

Dr. Richard Litke is one of those few saints beatified long before he left us. While we will miss him dearly, his example will be with us forever as a model of compassionate service to humanity and our common good.
