Condolence: I just recently learned of Mary Rose’s passing in July and was deeply saddened. Mary Rose and I were only 2 of 13 psychology majors of the class of 1970 at Marywood University (in our day it was still a college). I also had the very good fortune of being her roommate in our senior year. I think that both of us agreed that we were the perfect roommate for each other. We both hated mornings with a passion so we were very comfortable arising in silence, washing and dressing in silence and also walking to our first class in silence. It was after our first class that we were completely sociable and our affable, totally loveable selves , replete with fantastic personalities and brilliant yet modest senses of humor ! Regrettably throughout the 4 years that Mary Rose and I shared a friendship and identical subject matter, the one area that I never quite met her excellence was academically. All Mary Rose had to do was read something once and she owned it, thus the night before all exams, including quarterlies and finals, she was in bed and fast asleep by 10:00 pm while I was burning the midnight oil and cramming like crazy, desperately hoping that I’d remember something in the morning. Along with being a true scholar Mary Rose also found time to be on the varsity basketball team, was the coach for Marywood Seminary ‘s (the then Marywood’s High School) girl’s basketball team , and was also the student body elected Resident Student Rep, which during the turbulent 60’s was no cakewalk of a position to hold. Mary Rose could do it all. A natural born leader, a brilliant woman, a sensitive and compassionate human and someone with a great sense of humor. I suppose that the biggest injustice befell Mary Rose when she tried to pursue a doctorate in clinical psychology in 1970. Despite an enviable academic record and a near perfect score in her advanced GRE’s in psychology., no graduate school would accept her in that discipline. She was good enough for a doctorate in any other area of psychology from experimental to motivation and learning but no one though that women should be clinical psychologists in 1970. Instead of choosing another field , Mary Rose pursued a masters degree and continued to apply to graduate schools. It took 5 years before she was finally accepted by the University of South Dakota into their clinical psych program. I think that it’s safe to say that hundreds of mentally ill people in Connecticut are fortunate that she held out. Mary Rose was a very special person and I consider myself blessed that I knew her. I know that longevity wasn’t a hallmark of Mary Rose’s family and I’m sad that Mary Rose left us at such a young age. For those of you who haven’t reached that age, you’ll be amazed at how young you’ll think of yourself when you’re 70 !! Rest In Peace my friend. I hope that someday we’ll meet again on the other side. I’ll love you always.

Condolence: Sincerest condolences to family and friends for our loss of a beautiful person who was a friend to many. Mary will always be remembered as the kind , caring , genuine , person she lived throughout her life . She will be missed.
