The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Salli Schonning can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Thank you.

My friend Salli

Salli was the first 'new' friend after I was married.  We rented an apartment in Hermosa Beach that was owned by Gabe Schonning , and American Airline pilot and Salli his new bride (they were married 6 weeks earlier).  At that time one could not remain a stewardess and be married.  Interesting how times have changed. Salli was streets ahead of me in life if not in years.  The 4 of us shared many an evening of dinner and wine and became very good friends.  All of their friends were airline pilots (many of them not married) and there was never a dull moment. Peter and I are European - I'm German and Peter is Irish so many conversations about 'liberal' socialists in Ireland.  We only lived in Hermosa Beach for one year but the friendship lasted forever.  They visited us in Zurich and Vienna and Ireland we visited them in Jamul and then Whidby Island and there was never a dull moment.  I remember a time when there were with us in Vienna and the men had gone upstairs to bed after mucho vino and chat and Salli and i were sitting downstairs on the sofan and she told me she has found Jesus and he 'speaks' to her (I knew she didn't mean that literally but that she found solace in her belief.  Just then there was an almighty tump on the ceiling which had me jumping off the sofa -- Salli didn't move but said "that wasn't God, that was Gave falling out of bed" .  I guess our single guest beds didn't offer enough room.  Last time I saw Salli was this past February when we spent 3 weeks in Scottsdale.  Salli showed me all around the Phoenix she knew as a girl and we spent hours talking, and of course stopping for lunch or a snack break.  Every Sunday we went to the Presbytarian Church because once when my husband and I were there for 2 months I joined their fabulous choir (seeing I was missing my own choir here in Ireland.  There was never a hint or an idea that Salli was ill.  She was coming to Switzerland in the Spring but I couldn't meet her during that time frame.  I will miss her laugh, her positive attitude and the fun.  She told me she was planning on buying a house near where Steven lived as apartment living was not ideal for her.  She enjoyed being close to her boy and also to her darling grCtrl/Cmd+Vanddaughter Chloe.  She will be missed by all who knew her.
