Welcome to the Smith Funeral Home

The Smith Funeral Home was established as the J. Donald Smith Funeral Home in 1955 by J. Donald Smith in Chadwicks. It operated there until 1970 when it moved to its present facility at 3022 Oneida Street in Sauquoit. In 1976, Donald’s son, David, joined the firm and in 1998 the business was purchased by David and his wife, Lori. In 2019, Smith Funeral Home affiliated with Dimbleby Funeral Homes, Inc, a family owned four generation firm. 

The combined resources of Smith and Dimbleby funeral homes will ensure that your family’s wishes will continue to be met.

Donald L. Magadieu, 96, passed away on October 8, 2018 at the Waterville Residential Care Center.
He was born on July 11, 1922 in Chadwicks, a son of the late Fred and Jessie Newhouse Magadieu and received his education in Chadwicks schools. Don proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1943 until 1945.
His first marriage was to the former Doris Stocker and after her passing in 1961, was united in marriage with Gloria Buck in St. Anthony of Padua Church in Chadwicks.
His working career includes the Willowvale Bleachery and Drop Forge where he was a machinist and was also a onetime member of the Willowvale Fire Department.
He is survived by his three daughters and two sons in law; Sandra Linck of Clinton, Sharon and George Tibbs of Texas and Lisa and James Cheney of Cassville, his son and daughter in law; Ronald and Naomi Magadieu of N.C., 12 grandchildren, with special mention of Kayla Nicole and James Nathan, aka “Bubby”, and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife Gloria on December 12, 2011, his daughter, Cynthia Magadieu in 1958, his sisters; Evelyn Down, Katherine Murray and Helene Prentice and his brother; Robert Magadieu.
Donald’s Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, October 13 at 10:00 at St. Patrick’s-St. Anthony’s Church in Chadwicks. Interment with military honors will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Clayville.
His family would like to thank everyone who has helped care for Donald over the years; the staff at Waterville Residential Community, the Medicine Shoppe in Washington Mills, Dr. Sally O’Callahan and Elaine and Charlie Gaiser.
There will be no calling hours.
