Bessie graduated from Cheraw's Long Hill High School in 1958. After graduation, she married the late Hilliard Traynham in Cheraw, South Carolina later on in 1958. Soon after, the married coupled travelled North to New York City and settled in the borough of Brooklyn. Bessie graduated as a Registered Nurse with a AA/BA in Nursing and lived to be an exceptional Intensive Care Unit -Registered Nurse at Interfaith Medical Center. Her skills were unique and she had a heart for the patients she served.

Her daughter, Sharon Traynham, introduced her to Greater Free Gift Baptist Church where she re-directed her life and was baptized in 1993. She had a heart to not only serve in the hospital but to serve as a nurse to Bishop William Raymond Whitaker, JR., who she loved and cherished as a son. She inspired , trained and mentored others at her church to serve as faithful, dedicated, and attentive nurses as well.
