Obituary for Bertrand Elmer "Bert" Phillips

Bert, a/k/a “Pa”, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2019 at a Bangor hospital after a brief illness. He was born March 9, 1925, in Hampden, Maine and was looking forward to his 94th birthday.

Bert served for more than 22 years in the U. S. Marine Corps and was a proud Marine to the end. He was a three war veteran serving in the eras of WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Upon leaving the service, he worked for AMMEX managing the Houlton, Maine and Thousand Island Bridge, NY Tax and Duty Free stores. Bert was also a life-long Mason in the Lynde Lodge #174 A.F.& A.M. of Hermon.

Upon retirement, he moved to Okeechobee, FL with his wife Theresa. They very much enjoyed traveling, going on six ocean cruises and visiting forty-seven states. While living for more than 25 years in Okeechobee they made many close friends and had great memories of square dancing throughout the state. They returned to Maine in 2005 and enjoyed dining out and playing card games with friends and family.

Bert was predeceased by his loving wife Theresa, as well as sons Calvin and Leslie. He is survived by his daughter Marilynn Bishop, and her husband Randy of Veazie; a son Kevin Phillips and his wife Jane of Bangor; and a son, Dennis Phillips, of Warren; grandchildren Matthew Bishop of Bangor; Jessica Bishop and her husband Jacob Baker of Orono, whose wedding Bert was able to attend this past October; and Sara Berkebile and her husband Kevin of Lyndeborough, NH. He also leaves behind his special companion, Rascal, who was always by his side.

A special thanks to Dr. Kevyn Comstock and her staff for the wonderful care over the past 15 years.

Burial will take place at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Bangor at a later date. Gifts in Bert’s memory may be made to Honor Flight of Maine, P.O. Box 1770, Portland, ME 04104, or to the Animal Orphanage, 71 Airport Road, Old Town, ME 04468. Condolences to the family may be expressed at Brookings-Smith.com.
