Obituary for Ralph Black

BLACK, CAPT (ret’d) RALPH JOHN W. C.D. - Beloved son of Lillian and the late Ralph M. Black (1999), passed away January 13, 2013 after a valiant two-year battle with colon cancer. Ralph was a kind and thoughtful person, and was especially devoted to his mother, Lillian, using his vacations to take her Christmas shopping, on driving trips, to appointments, and whatever else she needed. Ralph was a true family man, devoted to all. He loved nature, and had a special place in his heart for animals. Ralph was born in Halifax, NS and graduated from Simonds High School. As a teenager, he joined 527 Simonds Air Cadets, later becoming an officer, and achieving the rank of Captain. He served as both Supply Officer and Transportation Officer with the Squadron, which took him on Citizenship Tours to military bases across Canada and the United States. He also travelled internationally with the cadet movement, visiting England, Scotland and Greece. After retiring from the cadet movement, he remained dedicated to 527 Squadron and would volunteer his time for the Annual Mess Dinner and Annual Review. Ralph had a life-long career as a professional motor coach driver, first with SMT, guiding his passengers through all but three American States. As a “people person”, he greatly enjoyed these trips, which he often talked about during the final months of his illness. The many friends he made during that era kept in touch with him. He later served as a driver with Acadian Coach Lines (Groupe Orleans Express) until he became ill. Over his career, he accumulated driving awards and drove at least two million road miles, with many satisfied customers. He was a member of Branch #4 Royal Canadian Legion, in Fredericton. He was also associated with #252 Wing RCAF, in Fredericton. Ralph is survived by his mother, Lillian Black, brothers Carl (Lorraine) of Fredericton and their children, Julie (Aaron) Worden and Angela (Jake) Waugh; Reginald (Heather) of Vancouver, BC; Ricky of Saint John; Weldon (Joanne) of Quispamsis and their children Andrew and Allison Black; Montgomery of Saint John and his children, Ryan, Emma and Renee of Saint John; and, sisters Victoria Lowe (David) of Saint John and their children, Jason (Rachael) and Christopher; Kendra Black of Toronto and her daughter: Danika Smit of Amsterdam, The Netherlands; and Kimberley Black of Saint John. Ralph was predeceased by his sister, Cynthia Marino (Bob) in 1995, daughters Christie (Keith), Lori Foley (Jay), and Jennifer Phillips (Terry) of Saint John. Ralph is also survived by great-nieces and great-nephews Jacqueline and Josh O’Brien; Samuel Worden; Keenan Lowe, and Camden Foley. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424) with visitation Tuesday, January 15, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., and Wednesday, January 16, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A traditional funeral service will be held from Fundy Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at 11 a.m. with interment to follow at Fernhill Cemetery. Donations may be directed to the Oncology Department of the Saint John Regional Hospital, the Saint John Animal Rescue League, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
