Obituary for Wayne Nightingale

NIGHTINGALE, WAYNE ALTON - December 1, 2012 - For 13 years, Wayne has waged a battle of epic proportions against cancer. He has done this with determination, grace, humour and great courage... the same attributes that served him so well in all aspects of his life. He will be forever loved and missed by his wife, singing partner, and eternal soul mate, Shirley Murphy. He is also survived by daughter Cheryl, sons Cameron and Gary (Cindy) and their mother, Muriel. He will also be fondly remembered by his four grandchildren, Jennifer, Matt, Leah, Mark, and great-grandson Darius. He will be missed by sisters Evelyn Davidson, Shirley Steele (Don) and many nieces and nephews, having a special bond with his niece, Geri. Wayne was very close to his wife's large and loving family. "The Murphs" simply adored him. They are: Isabel; Karen; Janet (Sandy); Tom (Tess); Pat (Annie); David (Donna); Rob (Sandy); Alleen Parsons (Dave); Sandra Smith; and Eleanor Murdoch (Darrell). Wayne was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Helen Nightingale; brother Estwood; sister Leola Kennedy; brother-in-law Don Smith; and nephew Jim Brogan. And also his beloved Lhasa Apsos, Tiffany and Madison. Wayne was a Beaverbrook Scholar, who went on to become executive director of the New Brunswick Teachers’ Federation, and was known throughout the province for his dedication to education, having received the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal for excellence in his field. Wayne was a very well-known musician in the province, having been inducted into the New Brunswick Music Hall of Fame with the Diamond Trio, as well as the Minto Country Hall of Fame. He also performed with many other well-known bands, including the Golden Bel Aires, Phoenix, Cadillac Jack, and worked as a duo with his wife Shirley. Special thanks to Dr. Shawn Dolan, Dr. Nicholas Keschtkar, and Dr. Gowan, the staff of the palliative care unit at the DECH, and the oncology units in Saint John and Fredericton, and the staff members of 4 Southeast and 3 Northwest at the DECH. Visitation will be at McAdam’s Funeral Home, 160 York St., Fredericton, on Wednesday, December 5 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral will take place at Wilmot United Church, 473 King St., at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 6. Reception to follow at the NBTF building at 650 Montgomery St. For those who wish, in memoriam donations made to the SPCA or the Canadian Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated by the family.
