Obituary for Margaret Nelson

Margaret I. Nelson, 90, of Moncton Residence, and formerly of Harrisville, with her family at her side, passed away peacefully at The Moncton Hospital on Thursday, April 20, 2017. Born in Westville, NS, she was the daughter of the late James and Jessie (MacKenzie) Porter.

Margaret was a retired schoolteacher, having taught at Harrisville and Arnold H. MacLeod schools with 30 years’ service. She attended Provincial Normal School in Truro and received her Bachelor of Teaching at the University of Moncton. She was a long time member of Harrisville United Protestant Church and Treasurer of the Sunday School for 47 years. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, former volunteer at Spencer Memorial Home, life member of Harrisville Ladies Cub & Scout Auxiliary, life member of the Moncton Kennel Club and life member of the Canadian Kennel Club, long time member of the Crystal Foundation Rebekah Lodge, Westville, NS. Margaret was known for giving of herself to others and for her dependability. She enjoyed cooking, her pet dogs, and socializing with friends and family.

Margaret will be sadly missed by her children, Gail Ralph (Stephen) of Moncton and Robert “Bob” (Heather) of Chicago, IL; precious grandchildren, Samantha and Taylor; sister, Jessie Dorie (Charles) of Pictou, NS; sisters–in–law, Kay MacLeod of Pembroke, ON, Margaret Forbes of Little Harbour, NS, Cathy Nelson of Westville, NS and Dorothy Porter of Trenton, NS; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Robert “Bob” S. Nelson (April 2002); one brother, James “Jim” Porter.

A special thanks to the Staff of the Moncton Residence and the 3600 Unit at The Moncton Hospital for the care and compassion given to our mother during her stay.

A Service to celebrate and honour Margaret’s life will be held at Harrisville United Protestant Church, (Shediac Road) on Sunday, April 23, 2017 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Charlotte Youland officiating. Reception following the service. Interment will be held at Fair Haven Memorial Gardens.

Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858–1995) in care of arrangements.
