Obituary for Angela McGibbon

Dr. Angela McGibbon, aged 51, passed away from a sudden illness on Sunday, February 11, 2018. Known to thousands of people as Doctor McGibbon, she was known to five as Mom– Grace, Tommy, Charlotte, Bessie and Anna McGinn. They represent her life’s greatest legacy.

The path to her children began in 1986 with meeting Jared McGinn, running to the University, both late for class. Together they created a home so full of love, warmth and joy that it envelops you when you open their door.

The brilliance, the compassion, the family values and the grace that she presented were a direct result of her beloved parents, Alex and Susan McGibbon of Gagetown, NB. Throughout her life, Angie has had close and loving relationships with her parents, her older brother Chris McGibbon (Krista), their children Rob and Maggie and her younger sister Jeanne Van den Broeck (Chris) and their children Izzy, Alex and Claire.

There is plenty to love and admire about Angie. Her professional accomplishments are many. Graduating from FHS in 1984, she loved being the high school yearbook editor. University education included a science degree from UNB (1988), a PhD in Immunology at the University of Calgary (1994), followed by medical school at Dalhousie (1998), with an internal medicine specialty (2001) and an Endocrinology subspecialty (2003). Along the way she met many people who taught, helped and inspired her: Tim Lee in Calgary and Halifax, Beth Mann in Halifax and Tom Barry in Fredericton.

inally, she landed back home in Fredericton living in her childhood home and gratefully treating the sick in her community. Angie cared about her patients and people in general. She felt sincere compassion for all people, regardless of circumstance, and had little time for negative thoughts or judgement. Anyone who has spent time in her presence knew the power of her voice– she had a soothing, nurturing way of making one feel like everything was just going to be ok.

Angie was interested in people– she always would want to compare what books you had read, what art you like or the next travel adventure you were planning. She loved art and recently started painting, trying to make her dad proud. Angie’s scope of abilities was so broad that if you knew her professionally, you wouldn’t necessarily realize the beauty of her paintings. And, if you had ever eaten her soup, you might not imagine her saving lives on a daily basis.

We would like to thank the DECH for the compassionate care they provided, the ambulance team, driven by Neville Hawks, and the NICU floor at the Moncton General Hospital. To Angie’s last nurses, Scott Thornton and Chantele Doiron, we will always be grateful for your kindness.

Our family is heartbroken to have to say goodbye to this epic force of a woman. We will miss her until the end of our own time.

Visitation will be held at McAdam’s Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 from 6 to 9 PM and Thursday, February 15, 2018 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM. A funeral Service will take place at St. Dunstan’s Catholic Church on Friday, February 16, 2018 at 2:00 PM with Fr. Bill Brennan officiating.
