Obituary for Raymond Vogan

After a hard–fought battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family, Raymond Vogan of New Maryland died at Fredericton’s Hospice House on Friday April 13th at the age of 71. Left to mourn are his wife Barbara (Burnham), son and daughter–in–law Warren and Christina Vogan, daughter Stephanie Moore, and grandsons Jacob Moore and Matthew Vogan.

Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Ray was the son of Samuel and Edith (Coote) Vogan. Ray, his mother, and brother Derek immigrated to Canada in 1966, settling in Toronto, where Ray apprenticed in the bookbinding trade and worked for the Carswell firm of legal publishers. He and Barb married in 1970, and in 1977 the family moved to New Maryland, NB. Ray was co–founder of R & R Bookbinders in Fredericton, and later worked for several printing and publishing companies in New Brunswick.

Ray was predeceased by his parents and by brothers Derek and Cyril. He is survived by sisters–in–law Joan Vogan and Lillian Vogan, both of Toronto; Anne MacLeod (Fred Nott) of Fredericton; Alice Adams (Randy) of Woodstock NB; Ruth Shaw (Steve) of Florenceville–Bristol, and by nieces and nephews Ross Ferguson, Julie Little, Jill Drury, Megan Anderson, Jeannine Vogan, Christopher Vogan, Jennifer Vogan, Nigel Vogan and Nyree Vogan. Ray also leaves behind a host of friends, neighbors and acquaintances, many of whom are smiling as they read this and recall good times together with Ray and Barb.

Family always came first with Ray, but politics ran a close second. He was a life member, and former director and officer, of the New Maryland PC Association, and a member of the Conservative Party of Canada. He was PC Campaign Manager for the New Maryland riding in the provincial elections of 1999, 2003 and 2006, and Conservative Campaign Manager for the Fredericton electoral district in the federal elections of 2008, 2011 and 2015 (winning the seat in five of those six elections). From 2003 to 2006 Ray served as Executive Assistant to the Hon. Keith Ashfield, then–provincial Minister of Natural Resources; Ray was a Policy Advisor to the Minister of State for ACOA from 2008 to 2011, and Director of the federal Regional Ministerial Office in Fredericton from 2011 to 2013.

Cremation will take place at McAdams Crematorium. At the request of the family, there will be no visitation. A Celebration of Life service will be held at the J. A. McAdam Memorial Chapel, 160 York St, Fredericton on April 16, 2018, at 11:00AM, officiated by the Rev. Deacon James Appleton. A reception will follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Ray’s memory should be made to Fredericton Hospice House or the Canadian Cancer Society.
