Obituary for Sheldon Rubin

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our dearest Dr. Sheldon Hershel Rubin on August 13th, 2018.

Sheldon was a devoted husband to the love of his life Sharon, to whom he was married for 45 years. Sheldon was a dedicated father to Gabrielle and Mitchell, as well as an adoring grandfather to Ethan and Madison, whom he held very close to his heart. Sheldon is survived by his two sisters Betty Druckman (late Isaac) and Rosalyn Attis (Sandy). He was greatly admired by his nephew Michael Druckman (Tamar), his nieces Nicole Druckman (Jack Haller), Dr. Marissa Attis, Ariella Attis, his great nephews Joshua and Samuel as well as his great niece Izzy. Sheldon’s life at home was greatly enhanced by the care of our honorary family member Lolita Jacinto, and for that we are grateful.

Dr. Rubin was born on February 10, 1943 to Mike and Sarah Rubin. Dr. Sheldon H. Rubin was the first practicing oncologist, as well as the second hematologist, in New Brunswick. He attended Dalhousie University in Halifax for both his pre–medical and medical education. He also did a rotating internship at Halifax's Victoria General Hospital. He furthered his training, with a Research fellowship in hematology at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto. He subsequently returned to Dalhousie for a Clinical fellowship in hematology. Sheldon received his Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and surgeons of Canada in both internal medicine and hematology in 1974.

Dr. Rubin became a staff member at The Moncton Hospital in 1975, as an oncologist and hematologist. In the same year, he also began as a consultant in the same fields at the Dr. Georges–L–Dumont University Hospital Centre.

In 1976, Dr. Rubin established a Chemotherapy Clinic, single–handedly treating patients from the entire eastern half of the province. He established the first comprehensive Hemophiliac Clinic in the province in May of 1988. The clinic, under the directorship of Dr. Rubin, was established in cooperation with the New Brunswick Hemophilia Society. In conjunction with Dr. Bill Thompson, he also started the first HIV treatment program in New Brunswick, and subsequently the first Hepatitis C program.

Dr. Rubin’s honors include:
Recipient of the N.B. Medical Society's Dr. Garfield Moffatt Medal for Excellence in Patient Care (1999)
Recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow Award, West Riverview Rotary Club (2000)
Recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012)
Recipient of the Order of New Brunswick (2016)

He has also written numerous papers for various medical publications and participated in many CME (continuing medical education) conferences across Canada, the United States and Europe.

Sheldon was a dedicated physician who loved his patients, often putting their well being before his own. He retired in April, 2016 at the age of 71. During his retirement celebration Sheldon was humbled and delighted by the announcement that the newly completed oncology clinic would bear his name.

On behalf of Dr. Sheldon Rubin the family would like to sincerely thank all medical staff members at both the Moncton Hospital and the Dr. Georges–L–Dumont University Hospital Centre who have been involved in his care. In particular Dr. Gordon Dow, his long–time friend, colleague, and physician as well as Dr. Yves Thibault and the Nephrology team at the Dr. Georges–L–Dumont University Hospital Centre. Sheldon will be deeply missed and we will carry him in our hearts forever.

Funeral Service for Dr. Rubin will be held at the Tiferes Israel Synagogue, 56 Steadman Street, on Wednesday, August 15th, 2018 at 3:00 pm. Interment will be in Tiferes Israel Cemetery, Dieppe. Arrangements under the professional care of Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858–1995).

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Oncology Clinic at The Moncton Hospital and the Nephrology Unit at the Dr. Georges–L–Dumont University Hospital Centre. Online condolences for the family can be shared at www.fergusonsfuneralhome.com
