Obituary for Reverend Richard Hartnett

1933-2018

Amherst: It was on October 3, 2018 that Reverend Richard James Hartnett age 85 of Amherst Nova Scotia, went to be with His Lord after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease. At his passing he was surrounded by the prayers and love of his family and those with whom he walked in faith.

Born in Halifax NS on June 18, 1933 to the late Tom and Mildred (Bowers) Hartnett, he was predeceased by all his siblings Howard, Doreen, Helen and Patrick. Rick was also predeceased by his “Clara Belle” Clara (Robbins) 11 months ago, after sharing 61 years of marriage. He devoted himself to her comfort throughout her illness, in spite of his own deteriorating health.

To list all of Dad’s career and accomplishments would be impossible. Of note, after his service with the Royal Canadian Airforce, he worked for the Dept. of Education Adult Vocational Training in Halifax for 11 years. It was during this time he became a part of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal and followed the Spirit’s call to Ministry in the Church. In 1981 he was ordained by Archbishop James Hayes to the Deaconate, Sacrament of Holy Orders.

During his lifetime, he ministered to his brothers and sisters in the Charismatic Renewal and in the parishes of the Halifax Diocese. He founded the Renewal Center in Fort Lawrence; for which he enthusiastically moderated many conferences and workshops, nationally and internationally. As Deacon, Rick served in the Chaplaincy Program at the Kingston Penitentiary before returning to the people of Amherst as their Deacon in both Catholic parishes until his health kept him from the Altar he loved.

He will be forever missed by his children Rick (Bev), Fort McMurray and Denise Hartnett (Rob Keith), Amherst: 5 grandchildren, Beth, Jennifer (Josh), David, Stephen and Emily; 4 great grandchildren, Liam, Loman, Maisie and Barrett. Dad’s love was not just limited to his own, but openly shared with his larger family. Also mourning are his special nephews and nieces. To these he gave both guidance and strength as only “Uncle Richie” could.

Arrangements are under the care and guidance of Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church Street, Amherst (902-667-8777). Visitation will be held from the Holy Family Parish Roman Catholic Church, Amherst on Monday, October 8, 2018 from 6-8 pm with parish prayers to be held at 7:30 pm. A funeral service will commence at the church on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at 11:40 am with praise and worship and a personal sharing. The service liturgy will start at 12 pm. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery

Donations in his memory can be made to the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, his life’s passion; or the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Holy Family Parish.

Sharing of memories and condolences may be sent to the family by visiting Dad's online memorial at www.furlongjones.ca or through the Furlong~Jones Funeral Home Facebook Page.
