Obituary for Gerald Kempster

SAINT JOHN, NB – It is with profound sadness mixed with deep gratitude for a gentle life well lived that the family of Gerald "Gerry" Kempster announce his passing on Wednesday, November 7, 2018. Born in Saint John, Gerry was the son of the late John "Jack" Kempster and the late Gertrude (Cosman) Kempster.

Gerry is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 57 years, Barbara Jean (Lawson) Kempster and three sons, Todd (Lori) of Richibucto, NB, Mark (Heather Forster) of Grand Bay Westfield, NB and Scott of Halifax, NS. Gerry was a devoted family man, a proud father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was lovingly known as Bubby to his six grandchildren, Jonathan, Joshua, Brandon, Laura, Mullen and Tessa and his three great grandchildren, Haylee, Brylee and Connor. He is also survived by his three sisters, Anne Langley (Tom), Connie Price (Dave) and Cathy Lamb (Gordon); along with nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Gerry was predeceased by his parents, Jean’s parents, Bonar and Wilhelmina Lawson and his brother–in–law, Stephen Humphrey.

Following graduation from Moncton High School, Gerry joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and was stationed in Greenwood, NS and Summerside, PEI before leaving the Air Force and returning to Saint John to teach at NBCC until his retirement in 1999.

Sports was a big part of his life, he played rugby, hockey, softball (gaining recognition for his pitching skills) and football; he also coached his sons in football. In his later years he curled, golfed and kayaked. Through the years one of Gerry’s greatest joys was spending summers at the family cottage in Rexton, NB; which was not only enjoyed by himself, Jean and his boys but by extended family and many friends.

Gerry maintained his active life until a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s changed not only his journey but the journey of all who love him, cherish him, and miss him. He was a good man and an honourable man.

The family would like to thank the CAM unit at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Ridgewood Veteran’s Wing for the respectful and loving care they gave to Gerry in the final months of his life; also a thank you to the Alzheimer’s Society of Saint John for their support.

Respecting Gerry’s wishes there will be no visitation or service; a private family interment will take place in Rexton at a later date.

For those who wish, memorial donations to the Alzheimer’s Society would be appreciated by the family.

Arrangements are entrusted to Thompson’s Funeral Home, Richibucto, NB (523–4252). Online condolences for the family may be made at www.thompsonsfuneralhome.com
