Obituary for Joyce Murphy

(March 15, 1929- January 21,2019)
Joyce died peacefully surrounded by loving family at the Moncton Hospital early Monday morning. She was 89. Joyce was the only child of Jack Lawlor and Henrietta (Irvine) Lawlor.

She attended Mountain Road School where in grade one she met her future husband, the late Dr. Frederick Murphy. After graduating from Moncton High (class of ’46) she went to St. FX and then was “capped” as a Registered Nurse at St Mary’s Hospital in 1950. She nursed at Montreal hospitals, and taught nursing for several years while Fred was at McGill.

Marrying Fred in 1955 and moving back to Moncton in 1960, she devoted her self to a life as wife to “Dr. Fred” and mother to John and Brian.

She was as happy hosting spaghetti dinners for her grandchildren and fishing at McFadden Lake as she was travelling to Paris with Fred, Rome with John or Ireland with Brian. She found a muse in the hills of Connemara and her watercolours of Irish landscapes are in many homes.

From her homes on Bromley Ave, then Front Mountain Rd. she was very much in support of “the boys” and their hunting, fishing, hockey and golfing adventures. She found time to be an active member of the CWL and served on the Capitol Theatre Board. She was active in the local Irish society but her true concern and love was people.

From the fish grocer helping her with lobster for her sandwiches, to the taxi drivers she became friends with or just about anyone she met, she loved conversation and laughs. A room was ever so much more full of light when Joyce Murphy was in it.

She was an involved grandmother to Erin, Neil, Brendan, Conal and Maclean (John’s) and Maeve, Megan and Bronwyn (Brian’s) at the multiple Christmas and Thanksgiving Dinners, as well as her famous Murphy Boxing Day event.

She was a lady in all respects. Joyce was taught to ask about other people and pass on compliments, and did she ever love a tea party. Always graciously turned out and concerned about style and etiquette without an ounce of snobbery.

She was the epitome of support and love. She had faith in the goodness of people and in God. She left us firmly knowing that she will now be with her Mommy, Daddy, the love of her life, Fred and her firstborn, John.

Funeral Mass will be Friday, January 25, 2019 at St Bernard’s Church at 11:00 am. Viewing will be Thursday, January 24 from 6 to 9 pm at Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995). Burial will be in the spring in Melrose.

Donations in Joyce’s memory can be made to the Friends of The Moncton Hospital. Online condolences for the family may be shared at www.fergusonsfuneralhome.com
