Auditor General of Canada
1958 - 2019
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Michael on Saturday, February 2, 2019.

Beloved husband of Georgina "George" and dear father of Malcolm and Geoffrey. Predeceased by father Dr. George Gordon Ferguson and mother Winifred Dorothea Norma Ferguson and mother-in-law Nancy Blizzard. Survived by father-in-law Roydon (Buzz) Blizzard.

Michael will be missed by his older brother Brian (Manuela) and younger brother Martin (Sarah) and their children Ashley (Adrien) and Craig (Kate) and by his brothers and sisters in law: Mary-Ellen and Blake Brunston and their children Mark (Katie) and Eric (Margaret); Karen and Stephen Howard and their children Becky (Dan), Ben (Jennifer), Laura (Spencer); Michael and Justine Blizzard and their children Hanna and Thomas. Also survived by grand nieces and nephews Archer, Evelyn, Maeve, Nora, Audrey and Clair.

Mike was born in Sackville, New Brunswick and moved with his family to Fredericton, New Brunswick in 1970. Mike graduated from Fredericton High School in 1976 and graduated from the University of New Brunswick with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1980. After earning his Chartered Accounting (CA) designation he joined the New Brunswick Office of the Comptroller in 1985. Mike was appointed New Brunswick Provincial Government Comptroller in 2000-2005, Mike was appointed New Brunswick Auditor General in 2005-2010 and Deputy Minister of Finance in 2010-2011. Mike was appointed Auditor General of Canada in November 2011 until his passing.

Mike loved his family above all things whether camping, canoeing, playing hockey, playing golf or board games Mike gave his all. He loved to joke and debate and challenge. Mike cared dearly about his responsibilities at all points in his career and always wanted the best for the people he worked with and saw everyone’s potential.

The family would like to extend appreciation to Dr. Vickers and the Oncology team at the Irving Greenberg Cancer Center. A special thank you to Dr. Shirley Bush and the team at the Elizabeth Bruyère Palliative Care Center for all of the loving care and compassion extended to Mike during his illness.

Also, a deep heartfelt thank you to the entire Office of the Auditor General family. Your continuous support and encouragement was instrumental in getting Mike and his family through this difficult time, he loves each and everyone of you very much.

Rest in Peace Mike you will always be remembered... such a beautiful man.

A public Memorial Service has been planned for Thursday, February 7, 2019 at 11 a.m. at Christ Church Cathedral Ottawa, 414 Sparks Street, Ottawa, followed by a reception in the church hall immediately afterwards.

In lieu of flowers donations would be appreciated to New Brunswick chapter of Easter Seals, DueNorth School programs in Nunavut or Vets Canada or a charity of your choice.
