Obituary for G. Barry Wishart

G. Barry Wishart, husband of Barbara (Cook) passed away peacefully at his home in Scotchtown on Grand Lake on March 16, 2019, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Avida, Quebec on May 13, 1950, he was the son of the late George and Louise (Gilbert) Wishart.

He is survived by his sons John (Antonella) and Mike (Janice) , his sisters Carol Ann Esnard (Winston) and Heather Landry (Byron), brother Jim, sister-in-law Bev Cook (John Brander) five nieces - Kate, Chelsea, Elissa, Tara, Victoria and Elizabeth and one nephew - Martin.

He came to New Brunswick to study Physical Education at UNB and upon graduation in 1973, became the Recreation Officer for the City of Fredericton (1973-1982). From 1982 until his retirement in 2011 he served as a sports and recreation consultant with the Province of New Brunswick. He truly loved his work and took quiet pride in his accomplishments; he was the founder of the Fredericton Touch Football Association and in 1978, the founder, first coach and lifeguard of the Fredericton Silver Dolphins - a seniors swim club which endures to this day.

Volunteerism was a way of life for Barry. He was President of the Fredericton District of Scouts Canada after 10 years as a Scout leader, an Honorary Life Member of the Royal life Saving Society after 10 years as President of the NB chapter, as well as 10 years service as Chairman of the Canadian Red Cross Water Safety - NB Division. He played, coached and refereed rugby and touch football. At the time of his death he was President of the Grand Lake West Recreation Council and a member of the Parish of Canning Local Service District.

His greatest love was his family and he enjoyed travelling widely with Barb and wintering in Florida in his retirement. He enjoyed all water sports, skiing and golf. His greatest wealth was his very wide circle of friends - some of whom only knew him by his nickname “Toad” - who were very loyal to him throughout his illness with visits, phone calls and emails.

At Barry’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. There will be a private family burial in Scotchtown followed by a gathering of family and good friends in the summer.

Appreciation is extended to the Extramural program for their exceptional support.
