Obituary for Shirley N. Wear

It is with great sadness that the family of Shirley Nan Wear (Barrett) announces her passing April 18, 2019 at the St. John St. Stephen Nursing Home. She was born on January 20, 1935 and later in her teens became the chosen daughter of Ernest and Edna Leach.

Shirley was a faithful member of Victoria Street Baptist Church, and later Main Street Baptist Church where she and Doug worked at Hope Mission. She was a Scout leader for many years, and was awarded the Eagle’s Award for her leadership. She was the office manager for Thorne’s Hardware for 15 years, and later did bookkeeping for her husband’s Shell station.

Shirley will be lovingly missed by her husband Doug of 50 years, her stepson Richard Wear (Kelly), granddaughter Kelsie Wear, sisters Erna Pullam (Eric) of Moose Jaw, SK, Kay Richardson (David) of Summerside, PE, sister–in–law Deborah McEachern of Rothesay, several nieces, nephews, and many close friends, as well as her pride and joy “Miss Mia”.

She was predeceased by sisters Shirley Phillips and Arlene Saunders, and a brother, Gerald Leach. Shirley loved to play sports, particularly basketball and softball; she played softball for the Saint John Red Sox which won the opening game of the Softball Association of NB Senior finals in 1950.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of the St. John St. Stephen Nursing Home for the excellent care shown to Shirley and the family while she was a resident there.

Resting at Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John (646–2424) with visitation on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. The memorial service will be held from the Fundy Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, April 27 at 2 p.m. Interment will take place at Greenwood Cemetery at a later date.

For those who wish, remembrances to Diabetes Canada, RiverCross Mission, Alzheimer Society of Canada, or the Saint John SPCA – Animal Rescue League would be appreciated by the family.
