Obituary for Mervin Sr. Symes

Mervin Symes Sr. passed away peacefully May 7, 2019 at the age of 78 surrounded by family. He passed away as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident April 18, 2019. He was born in Smith’s Corner, New Brunswick the oldest son of the late Clarence and Edna (Heskett) Symes.

He returned to the homestead in 1988 and has lived there for the past 31 years. He started Symes Roofing & Siding in 1962 and ran it until he retired in 1988. His son Melvin still runs the business today. Mervin was a life time member of the Hum Lew Sun Lion’s Club. Mervin, and his award winning 56 Ford, were always prominent at the shows around the province. He was a member of the NB Antique Car Club and the Ford Country Club. There is nothing he loved more than spending time with the family and friends and tinkering in the garage.

A traditional obituary could never do this man justice. He changed the trajectory of a family. From a life on the farm in rural New Brunswick, he started and grew a business that helped the entire family and so many others. He loved unconditionally and held space for everyone to find their way. He gave his children and grandchildren the type of head start many can only dream of. He looked after his family to the very end – giving us all a chance to say goodbye.

He will be deeply missed by his wife of 60 years, Muriel (Mickey) McDonald, his three kids and their partners Mervin Jr. (Sheila), Evie (Steve) and Melvin (Darlene). Their five grandchildren Matt (Emily), Tracy (Jeremie), Mark, Shane (Candice), Mitchell (Catherine). And their seven great-grandchildren Isaac, Jude, Masai, Alec, Lydia, Ellington, and Bubble. He will be deeply missed by his brothers and sisters Elsie (Late Claude), Betty (Galen), Joe (Alice), Charlie (Suzanne) and his Aunt Sue in Cape Cod.

Visitation at Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995) on Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm. A Service to celebrate and honour Mervin’s life will be held at Fergusons Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, May 10, 2019 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Cecil Symes officiating. Reception in the Funeral Home Reception Centre following the service. Interment will be held at the Catholic Cemetery in South Branch.

In memory of Mervin, donations to Friends of The Moncton Hospital (ICU) would be appreciated. Online condolences for the family may be shared at www.fergusonsfuneralhome.com
