Obituary for James Kirwan Wood

With great sadness but with appreciation of a life well-lived, the family of James Kirwan Wood, husband for 64 years of the late Catherine (Tootie) Brown, mourn his passing which occurred on Thursday, May 9, 2019 at the Veterans’ Unit of the Campbellton Regional Hospital. Born on April 23, 1923 in Kent Junction, NB, he was the son of James Ernest and Elizabeth Ellen (Walsh) Wood.

Kirwan joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942 and served overseas in Burma until 1945. After leaving the forces, he returned home to Campbellton where he worked at several car dealerships, retiring from Lounsbury Company Limited in 1984.

Kirwan was active in several community organizations; UCT, Scouting, Air Cadets and the RCAF Wing, to name a few. He served on the Campbellton City Council for three terms.
He was a great “organizer” whether it be ball tournaments, hockey pools, shuffleboard or “parties” on the third floor of Bursey Towers.

He is survived by his daughter, Karla (Frank) Culligan and his son, Allan (Suzanne); grandchildren, James (Karla) Culligan, Catherine (Donny) Cormier, Michael (Lyne) Wood, Mark (Kilby) Wood and Sara (Ben) Power; great-grandchildren, Shayna and Ryan Culligan and Amber Lyne Wood; sister, Teresa (late Arnold) Dobson; sisters-in-law Vera (late Vincent) Wood and Linda (late Hank) Noort; many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and his wife; sisters Loretta Taylor, Mae Nelson, Peggy Shuler, Anita Vipond and brother, Vincent (Bunt).

Funeral Mass, with Father Keith Goldrup, was celebrated at Saint Thomas Aquinas Church, Campbellton, on Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at 2 pm. Visitations were held at Maher’s Funeral Home, 33 Lansdowne St., Campbellton, on Monday May 13, 2019 from 7 pm to 9 pm.

The family would like to thank the staffs from the Village Nursing Home and the Veterans’ Unit for their wonderful care of our dad.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Village Nursing Home, the Veterans’ Unit or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Funeral arrangements were in the care of Maher’s Funeral Home, Campbellton. (506) 789-1699 or toll free (855) 404-1699 email: maher.fh@nb.aibn.com
