Obituary for Doris Atkinson

1925-2019
Born in Quarryville, NB, to Herman and Ruby (Jardine) Touchie, Doris was the third of eight children. Several moves led to Moncton where she displayed a superior talent for sales at Eaton’s. At church she met Bruce, the love of her life for 70 years as he always treated her as his “First Lady”. Mum always wore stunning hats, and the latest fashions making a striking entrance wherever she went. She was a full-time mother, a perfectionist housekeeper, managing many moves with Bruce's studies, ministry and Department of Education work. She was also a pioneer woman who could plant, harvest, and preserve a large garden, tap maple trees, pitch a tent and get a fire going, and make the best relish and pickled beets. She was truly a "phone babe" who called friends and family often. Xmas cards for 200 was the norm with Xmas gifts for everyone up to 3rd generations of children. She held extended family close to her heart and made visits. Doris loved babies and knitted over 500 caps for the IWK which she supported to her last days. Family got washable wool socks, at least 200 pair. She was the consummate conversationalist, intuitive and insightful, seeking all the details of your life.

She was the proudest grandmother of Kim Hutchinson (Steve Clayton) and Peter (Josie) Atkinson and Phillip Atkinson and of her Great granddaughters Emma and Hayley Atkinson. She was a very generous and loving mother to Donna and Lonnie and their spouses, Cliff Hutchinson and Joan (Best). Doris leaves behind sisters, Mabel Goguen, Moncton and Ruth Johnson, California. Mum was predeceased by her husband Bruce, her siblings, Wilson Touchie, Margaret (Bob Moore), Jack (John) and Ruth Touchie, Marshall (Buster) and Shirley Touchie, Bernice and Hollis Steeves and brother-in-law Fred Goguen.

The family thank the entire staff at Serenacare in Moncton for their loving professional care of Mum these last three years. She was always coiffed, dressed and bejewelled as she wanted, and felt cherished by this wonderful staff.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of her life will be held at Fergusons Funeral Home Chapel, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995), on Thursday, May 16, 2019, with visitation, 9:30 to 10:30 am. O.E.S. Memorial Service at 10:30 am, followed by a service and reception.

If you wish to make a memorial gift, the IWK would welcome your donation in Mum’s memory, IWK Foundation, B220-5855 Spring Garden Road, Halifax, NS B3H 4S2 www.IWKfoundation.org, or donate to a place of your heart. Online condolences on the Funeral Home Facebook page or at www.fergusonsfuneralhome.com
