Obituary for Frederick MacKenzie

Frederick Carleton MacKenzie passed away peacefully, at home with family by his side, as he wanted. He was in his 91st year.

How does one sum up a life so full? Fred was born in Blackville New Brunswick to Otto MacKenzie and Lucy Jardine. He grew up in a family of five boys and two girls. At a young age, he went to work in the lumber mill in Blackville and later in Doaktown. There, he met his future wife, Ruth Robinson. He followed his brothers to Toronto Ontario, for work. Ruth joined him, after completing her nurses training and they were married July 1, 1952.

In the early days, Fred worked at Orenda Engines, part of AVRO Canada, in the production of military aircraft and engines, and later, driving transport. He always loved babies and puppies and there was never a shortage of either in our home! Over the next twelve years, they had nine children before moving back to Doaktown, to be closer family after the passing of both their fathers. There, much to their surprise, they added one more son to the crew!

Fred was very proud of his family and worked hard to provide for them. He worked as a mechanic most of his life, taught, as he says, by his grandfather. He had a great love of old cars and trucks. When work slowed down during the New Brunswick winters, he’d travel to the logging camps in northern BC to work as a heavy equipment mechanic. He would eventually start his own business, MacKenzie Enterprise, repairing all types of vehicles, buying and selling cars and operating MacKenzie Towing. When he finally slowed down, he was able to pursue his love of woodworking turning bowls on the wood lathe. He was loved and respected by many and always had a joke or story for anyone who knew him.

He is survived by his seven daughters, Wendy (Billy) Murphy, New Brandon, NB; Karen (Jerry) Lyons, Calgary, AB; Heather (Umberto) MacKenzie/Wilner, The Pas, MB; Janice (John) MacDougall, Chesley, ON; Nancy Gallant, Cole Harbour, NS; Carolyne (Rick) Brown, Georgetown, ON; and Shirley (Harold) Curley, Ottawa, ON, three sons, David (Karen) MacKenzie, Edmonton, AB; Steven (Genevieve) MacKenzie, Saint John NB and James (Krista) MacKenzie, Durham Bridge, NB. As well as 23 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Also survived by two sisters, Thelma Oja, Fergus, ON, Joan Mitchell, Mississauga, ON and one brother, Otis (Sandra) MacKenzie, Brampton ON.

He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth Robinson; his parents, Otto MacKenzie and Lucy (Jardine) MacKenzie and brothers Beaumont, Kingston, Floyd and Robert.

Cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Canadian Cancer Society or the charity of your choice. Online condolences may be sent by visiting www.coleharbourfuneral.com
