Obituary for James Franklin Curwin

March 13, 1932 – May 16, 2019
Curwin, James, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on May 16, 2019 at the age of 87. Jim, or “Gar” as he was known to his grandchildren, was born in 1932 in Rexton but lived most of his life in Moncton, where he met the love of his life, Marjorie. They were married in 1954 and she remained at his side until the end, holding his hand as he took his last breaths. He was the son of the late Ralph and Marjorie (Clark) Curwin.

Jim was known to all as a kind and gentle man, with a soft spot for animals of all kinds. He also loved children, and nothing made him happier in his final years than playing “Hide and Seek” with his great–grandchildren.

Jim was a hard worker his whole life—and never one to sit still. He began his career with a paper route at the age of 8 and spent most of his working days as a sheet metal worker at the CN shops, where he served as union financial secretary for 12 years. He also served as a volunteer fire fighter for many years.

In his spare time Jim was an avid sports fan. He loved watching the Blue Jays play baseball on TV, and swore he was not going to die until his beloved Toronto Maple Leafs won another Stanley Cup. He didn't quite make it, but he will be cheering them on from heaven next year. He also loved playing sports, and was known for his exceptional hand–eye coordination at games such as bowling, curling, horseshoes and, more recently, washer toss, where he was practically unbeatable.

But Jim's first priority was always his family. He loved nothing more than his days at the cottage at “Ann's Acres”, where he spent much quality time with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marjorie (nee Brighton), daughters Beverly (Wayne Franklin) and Julie (Chris Milburn), grandsons Adam Franklin (April Saulnier), Sean Franklin (Kim) and Mark Franklin (Adrienne), six great-grandchildren, sister Betty Swetnam, and brothers Gerald (Joan), William (Linda) and Allistar (Christine).

He was predeceased by his sister Anna Leblanc and brothers Ralph, Donald, Robert, Clarke and Claude.

A memorial service celebrating Jim's life will be held at First Baptist Church, 157 Queen Street, Moncton on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at 10:30 am. A reception will follow the service and all are invited to attend. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Arrangements entrusted to Fair Haven Funeral Home, 1177 Salisbury Rd. Moncton (506) 852–3530. A book of online condolences is available at www.fairhavenmemorial.ca
