Obituary for Marian Ada Chartley

1924 – 2019
On the ninth anniversary of the death of her beloved husband, Ross, Marian Ada Chartley of Moncton, passed away at the K. E. Spencer Memorial Home on Thursday, May 16, 2019 at the age of 95, surrounded by children and grandchildren.

On the morning of her birth, in the family home in in Rosevale, Albert Co., a bluebird lighted on her windowsill. Marian was a daughter of the late Harry and Jean A. (Soper) Stevens. A former resident of Peoples Park Tower, Marian and Ross made their home on Metcalf Street for more than 60 years.

Marian was formerly employed with CNR and T.A.S (Telephone Answering Service). She is a longtime member of Mountain View United Church and the UCW, a Sunday school teacher and a Brownie leader. She also volunteered at the Moncton Hospital for more than 40 years.

Survived by brother, James Robert Stevens of Quispamsis; her daughters JoAnn Thompson Franklin (Ian) and Jane Chartley (late Michael Taylor), all of Lower Coverdale; son, Steven Chartley (Carolyn) of Brampton, ON; six grandchildren: Allison (Joshua McAuley) and Kevin (Kerilyn) Thompson, Leigh Ann Owen (Darin Ellis) and Shawn Taylor (Kristin) and Connor and Ellis Chartley; six great grandchildren, Graham Scott, Devin, Brett and Bayleigh Owen and Luke and Jack Taylor and two great great grandchildren, Lukah and Mia as well as several nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband F. Ross Chartley in 2010; sisters, Hazel Swim, Laura Stevens; Kaye Gardiner and Eleanor Dunbar as well as son–in–law Michael Taylor and beloved nephews Bill Campbell and David Swim.

Marian was a strong but gentle soul with a great sense of duty and honour that made her a fierce defender of her family and those she loved as well any stray animal, hippie, geek or horsey person who needed a meal or a kind and tolerant sounding board. She loved a great debate and was truly accepting of all, regardless of their race, age, religion, sexual orientation and had many dear friends from each of those categories.

She taught those values to her children and, although she had the right stuff to be anything she chose, her role as parent and grandparent pleased her above all else. She liked the simple pleasures: roast pork and sauerkraut, a good cup of tea and a good book, green beans and new potatoes from her garden and a night spent watching Blue Bloods, indulging her longstanding crush on Tom Selleck. And Dad was okay with that.

She loved a challenging crossword puzzle and got great pleasure out of correctly adding long columns of figures in her head. She loved all cats, dogs, birds and horses and they loved her. For many years, instead of birthday and Christmas gifts, Marian requested cat food to be donated to CARMA.

We are grateful for Marian’s long life and all she taught us. We are confident she and Dad are reunited now and will continue to watch over those they loved.

Visitation will be held at Tuttle Brothers & Riverview Funeral Home 214 Pine Glen Rd. Riverview, on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral service at Mountain View United Church, MacBeath Avenue, on Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at 4:30 p.m. with Rev. Debra Baker officiating. Interment will be in Stevens–Rosevale Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, Mom would be grateful for donations to CARMA Cats or Cavalier Riding Club for the Disabled.
