Obituary for Alma Hayward

Alma Irene Hayward, age 77, of Halifax, passed away Sunday, June 9, 2019 at the Palliative Care Centre at the VG Hospital. Born in Bathurst, NB on June 21, 1941 she was the daughter of Pearl and Edgar (Toots) Gammon. She and husband Roy recently celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary.

She volunteered for 23 years at the Palliative Care Centre, Halifax. She volunteered at St. Andrew’s United Church, Halifax where she ran the Drop-In Centre for five years and was a member of the Pastoral Care Team. She spent many hours researching her family tree which was a real passion for her. She enjoyed the Herald Tribune crossword books and was an avid reader especially mysteries. She and Roy loved hiking especially in the Adirondacks in upper New York state and Mount Carlton in New Brunswick. She was a member of the United Empire Loyalist Association and confirmed her ancestry back to her original Loyalist. She was an active member of the Cole Harbour Heritage Society concentrating on the Meeting House where an ancestor is buried in the graveyard. She enjoyed traveling especially to Europe and spent several spring months in Florida. She worked for CIBC both in Montreal and Halifax.

Alma is survived by husband Roy, daughter Karen O’Keeffe (Seamus) of Toronto and granddaughter Tara of Orangeville, Ontario. Also her daughter Cheryl Fletcher of Victoria, BC and grandchildren Matt and Nick. Also survived by sisters Dorothy Gammon, Bathurst, NB and Betty (Kerry) Mattila, Burritts Rapids, Ontario, neice Barbie Fitters, Morelia, Mexico and Richard Fitters, Bathurst.

The family appreciates enormously the wonderful care of the doctors and nurses of the Palliative Care team for their guidance and support during Alma’s struggle with her cancer and also the VON and EHS Paramedics.

There was a service of celebration of Alma’s life at St. Andrew’s United Church, 6036 Coburg Road, Halifax on Friday, June 14, 2019 at 2 pm, reception followed in Church Hall. She has been cremated and her ashes will be buried alongside her parents in Bathurst, NB at a later date. To leave an online condolence, please visit www.jasnowfuneralhome.com
