Obituary for Howard Cogswell

“I go to prepare a place for you… that where I am, there you may be also.” – Jesus speaking in Gospel of John 14.

Howard’s earthly life ended on June 11, 2019. He was born in Fort Fairfield, Maine to parents Leon and Parvetta (Hilyard) Cogswell. He outlived his parents, brother Norman and sister Edith. In 1960 he married Joyce Ellen (Young) Cogswell.

His achievements were many, and the influence for good that flowed into the lives of his students, coworkers, and acquaintances, is still having an impact. Even forty years later expressions of gratitude to him are still voiced.

Howard’s volunteerism is commendable. He served on many boards and committees. He was the founding president of Laubach Literacy, Canada. A skilled writer and poet he has had many articles published, as well as poems in four International Library of Poetry books by Nobel House. He served in the US Army and his additional travels have taken him to four continents, including three periods of work in China. He became a Canadian citizen in 1984. Never did he boast of his academic qualifications (BA, MA, MLS) but used his knowledge to do his work with expertise and integrity and to enrich the lives of others.

Still living is his wife, Joyce, sister-in-law, Linda Young, brother-in-law, William Bassett, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

“This life is only a prelude to eternity.” –Seneca
Howard has gone to his Eternal Home.

Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (634-7424). Visitation will be held at Saint John First Wesleyan Church, 399 Boars Head Road on Thursday, June 13, 2019 from 3 to 7 pm. A funeral service will be on Friday, June 14, 2019 at 1:00 pm from SJ First Wesleyan Church.

For those who wish, remembrances may be made to Saint John First Wesleyan Church or Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship. Online condolences may be placed at www.BrenansFH.com
