Obituary for Gerald Thompson

THE PONDS – Gerald Alan Thompson, 88, The Ponds, passed away, Monday, June 17, 2019 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow surrounded by his loving family. Born in Moncton, N.B., he was a son of the late Eldon and Maud (Prouse) Thompson.

Gerald was a sale representative for Goodyear Tire for 28 years and owned/operated Thompson Tire in Port Hawkesbury from 1973-1978. He was road foreman with the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and a spare school bus driver for Pictou County. Gerald was part of his son, Bryce’s fishing crew, fishing lobster and herring for many years. In his retirement years, he cooked and sold lobsters and, salt herring. Gerald was a longstanding member, serving Elder and staunch supporter of several Presbyterian and United churches, most notably, St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Merigomish. He was a talented actor, preforming with the Sea People Players and the Lismore Wintertime Revue. Gerald also enjoyed singing, as a member of the church choir and in earlier years a member of a traveling church quartet. He was a past member of the Bluenose Curing Club and an ardent card player. The last surviving member of his immediate family, Gerald was known for his kindness and generosity.

Surviving are his wife, Doris (Murdock) (Arbuckle) Thompson; sons, Reginald “Reggie” (Jill), Stratford, P.E.I.; Timothy “Timmy” (Marjorie), Edgerton; Kevin (Lois), The Ponds; Bryce (Donna), Woodburn; Ivan (Alison), Trenton; Foster (Sandra), Avondale; step-children, Eric (Darrell) Arbuckle, New Glasgow; Wendell (Stephanie) Arbuckle, Stellarton; Lionel (Cathy) Arbuckle, Foxbrook; Vickie (Marilyn) MacDonald, The Ponds; Merton (Patsy) Arbuckle, MacLellan’s Brook; Charlene (Phillip) Lalande, Owen Sound, Ont.; Connie Clark, Thorburn; Todd Arbuckle, The Ponds; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Mercie (Cunningham); sisters, Patricia “Pat”, Maud, Marie and twin-sister, Geraldine; brothers, Stafford, Raymond and Norman.

The family will receive visitors 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 20th in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, June 21st in St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Merigomish with Rev. Pat Rose officiating. Interment will be in Murray’s Point Cemetery.
