Obituary for Helen Patterson

April 3, 1929- June 18, 2019
Surrounded by her family, in the comfort of her own home, Helen Treadwell (MacRae) Patterson passed peacefully on June 18, 2019. Helen was born on April 3, 1929 in Black River Bridge, NB to the late James Robert MacRae and Grace Badenoch (Fraser) MacRae.

Helen graduated from Miramichi Rural School before attending Teacher’s College. She later received her Bachelor of Education Degree after attending summer school and doing numerous correspondence/evening courses. She retired in 1986 after 36 years of teaching. Most of these years were spent as a Special Education teacher, which was her calling. Even after retirement, Helen continued to educate students as a tutor.

Helen loved to travel and did so extensively. She traveled all over Canada and the United States, Scotland, England, Ireland, Mexico, Barbados, Australia, New Zealand and her favorite, Africa.

Helen was well known in the neighbourhood, as she collected for the Heart and Stroke, Cancer, Diabetes and Kidney Foundations. She belonged to MARTA (Miramichi Area Retired Teacher’s Association), Miramichi Golf and Country Club and Bridge Club, Miramichi Highland Society, Bay du Vin Book Club, Stewards for Knox United Church, and was a supporter of the Dr. Graham Homes for over 40 years.

She loved to play Bridge, do crossword puzzles, was an avid reader and loved chatting about religion and politics. Helen was one of the most intelligent, kind-hearted and generous people you could ever meet. She was never a person to judge and never said an unkind word. (Unless you were a politician who was doing a terrible job-that was another story)! These qualities made her the absolute best mother and friend anyone could ask for.

Helen was predeceased by her parents, husband Robert (Bob) in 1982, her brother Fraser and his wife Lydia MacRae, sister Mary and her husband Bud Jamieson, as well as her long-time friend and companion William “B” Rigley.

She is survived by her children Jamie, Laurie (Janice) and one daughter Lisa (Aaron), grandchildren Wendy, Bobby (Diane), Pam (Joel), MacRae (Emily) and Shay. She is also survived by great grandchildren Trevor, Emma and Kate, sisters in law, Rita Patterson, Annie Nolan and Libby Hay. She is also survived by dear friend Frances Blakely, several nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held at Adams Funeral Home Ltd., 140 King St., Miramichi on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Funeral service was held at St. Stephen’s United Church, Black River Bridge on Monday, June 24, 2019 at 2pm with Rev. David Allan officiating. Music for the service was provided by David Mann and the Loggieville/Black River Pastoral Charge Choir and the hymn “Here I Am Lord” sung by the choir, “Morning Has Broken” and “Hallelujah” sung by Wendy and Dawn Patterson, “The River” and “The House of the Potter” sung by Al Fraser and the recessional hymn “Amazing Grace” was played by Louis Galliah on the bag pipes The lighting of the Christ and Memorial Candle was by Bobby Patterson. Scripture reading and poems were read by Frances Blakely, Pam Patterson Ward and Diane MacRae. The eulogy was presented by MacRae Lynch. Honorary pallbearers were Aaron Butler, Bobby Patterson, Joel Ward, Ricky Patterson, John MacRae, Frances and Buddy Blakely, MacRae Lynch, Shannon Manderville, Grant Donnelly, Jim MacRae, Libby Hay, Billy Hay, Rita Patterson, Annie Nolan, Margot Williston, Margie Bremner, Lottie McLenaghan, Edie MacDonald, Carol Johnston, Dave Walsh, Debra Duplessie, Arthur Losier, Bill Rigley and Errol Jamieson. Retired teachers sat as a body and formed and honour guard. Interment was held in the Black River Community Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the following: Rev. Douglas Smith Scholarship Fund, St. Stephen Cemetery Fund/Church Fund, Miramichi Area Retired Teacher’s Association Scholarship Fund, Miramichi SPCA or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Arrangements were entrusted to Adams Funeral Home Ltd., 140 King St., Miramichi, telephone 773-3492 or messages of condolence may be sent online to www.adamsfh.ca
