Obituary for Maxwell Scott Granter

On Friday, June 14, 2019, Maxwell Scott Granter passed away peacefully with family at his side. Born in Greenspond, NL, he was a son to James and Caroline Granter and the beloved husband of Margaret (McCarthy) Granter.

An independent man from “the rock”, Scott spent 27 years in the Canadian Armed Forces and, after retiring, took a position with the Corps of Commissionaires. He was proud of his service and, when asked, shared his experiences – including, but not limited to, his time in Alert and his six-month peacekeeping tour in Cypress.

After battling a decade’s worth of health issues, Scott won the fight in his own way. He will be remembered for his perseverance and strong will to the end; those who knew him would have expected nothing else.

Along with his wife Margaret, Scott is survived by his children Kimberly (Alex) Borthwick, Parksville, BC, James (Sally Shepard), Burtts Corner, NB, Michael (Robert Doiron), Halifax, NS, and Tim (Penny), Hanwell, NB; Brother Harvey, St. John's, NL; sister Bernice Herrell, Labrador City, NL; grandchildren Gregory (Angela) Payne, Parksville, BC, Melissa Payne (Cody Koivunen), Ucluelet, BC, Tyler (Julia) Granter, Truro, NS, and Courtney Granter (Mitchell Donohue), Halifax, NS; five great-grandchildren, sister-in-law, Nancy McCarthy, brother-in-law Hedley Munn, several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Marshall and Job and his sisters Marjorie Coward and Beulah Purchase; parents-in-law Fred and Gladys McCarthy, brothers- and sisters-in-law Earl “Duke” and Georgina Price, Myrtle and Percy Palmer, Mary Munn, and Jim McCarthy.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Scott's doctors and nurses for their excellent care – including, but not limited to, Doctors MacKinnon, Charlebois, Webster, D. Barry, Christie, and Cameron, as well as Charlene, Debra (“Debbie”), and their fellow nurses at the Hemodialysis Unit and the DECH’s Medical Unit (4SE) respectively; to his friend and driver Jerry Hayward; and, to his niece Nancy Granter for her kind assistance at this difficult time. Thank you, also, to family and friends for the many kind expressions of sympathy; your comforting thoughtfulness is deeply appreciated.

By Scott's request there will be no visitation or service at this time.
