Obituary for Anne Forbes

Anne died peacefully on 21 July 2019 in Fredericton, NB.

She was predeceased by Robert, her husband of 73 years, her sister Alice Gaukrodger (Bill), and her brother Murdoch (Lois).

Anne is survived by her sisters Mary Cormier (Leo), Saint John, and Jean Glass (John), New Jersey; her three children, Ian (Debbie), British Columbia; Bruce (Carol Ann), Florida; and Janet Forbes–Scott (Kevin), Massachusetts; her grandchildren, Gregory (Stephanie), Jack (Cassidy), Alexander, and Robin; and eighteen nieces and nephews.

The eldest of five children, Anne (known as Nan to her family) was born in Fredericton in 1925 and grew up on the Experimental Farm, where her father was the Assistant Superintendent. In the 1920’s, the farm was well beyond the city limits, a world unto itself that did much to shape Anne’s character.

Married in 1945, Anne’s academic career was cut short after two years of university, but her innate intelligence, fortitude, and spirit were on display throughout her life. With Bob away for two years, pursuing an advanced degree in the US, Anne singlehandedly managed the household in Sunshine Gardens, including the care of two young boys and a baby girl, two student boarders, and a wood–burning furnace that required round–the–clock attention during the winter.

Anne’s talents were wide–ranging. An accomplished seamstress and baker, and a keen bridge player, she was also the mechanically–minded member of the Forbes household, whether maintaining her sewing machine or repairing a broken kitchen appliance. Although not necessarily a sportswoman, Anne was a willing participant in skiing and golf. And amidst her busy life on the home front, she found time to socialize with the ladies of Acacia Court, research her family’s genealogy, and work at UNB’s Harriet Irving Library for many years. She was a lifelong member of St Paul’s United Church, and of the United Church Women. In later life, Anne and Bob spent more time at the Grand Lake cottage, and traveled extensively overseas and within North America, visiting their grandchildren.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the dedicated and loving staff of Windsor Court Retirement Residence.

A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s United Church, Fredericton NB, on 31 August at 2:00PM.

In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, donations can be made to St. Paul’s United Church or to the charity of choice. Online condolences can be made at www.mcadamsfh.com.
