Obituary for Peggy Piers

After a long active life, Peggy Pauline O’Blenis Piers passed away peacefully on August 9th, 2019, in her 91st year, at the Moncton Hospital. Born January 29th, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Manley & Lena (Layton) O’Blenis and she grew up in Salisbury, NB. Peggy was married in 1948 to James H Piers (former Fire Chief in Moncton & D Day Veteran) and is survived by her daughter Pamela Piers (Graeme Duffus) Halifax & niece Sandra (Taylor) Sim, Halifax. Peggy was predeceased by her husband James Howard Piers (2011), daughter Penny Lynn (1975), brother Donald O’Blenis and sister Aileen Peterson.

Peggy was an avid and passionate curler who was inducted into the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame in 1984 as a builder and as a successful New Brunswick curler. She skipped her rink in the National Senior Ladies (1983) and was mate at (3) Mixed National Championships, along with husband Jim, where they represented their home Province of New Brunswick. During these years Peggy served as President of the NB Ladies Curling Association and the Moncton Curlers Association. In recognition, Peggy was inducted into the Moncton Wall of Fame in 1986. She was also an avid speed skater (Bicentennial Skating Club member) in the winter, both of which she continued to participate in well into her 80’s.

Peggy was a long serving volunteer for 35 years at the Moncton Hospital, starting in 1978, and became a life member of the Moncton Hospital Health Care Auxiliary. Peggy spent her summers with Jim, family, friends and pets, at their cottage on Hunter’s Lane Parlee Beach and enjoyed lawn bowling in both Moncton and Shediac. She served as President at the William Ling Lawn Bowling Club in Shediac. Peggy was a Charter member of the UCW of St. John’s United Church in Moncton.

Heartfelt appreciation and thanks to the staff and administration at People’s Park Tower, for their care & service during Peggy’s time in the facility. Also to the exceptional dedication of the Palliative Care team at the Moncton Hospital and particularly the kindness, advice and concern of Doctor Christine Telfer, Peggy’s Family Physician.

Memorial Service will be held at Fergusons Funeral Home at 1657 Mountain Road, in Moncton, (858-1995) on Tuesday, August 13th, at 1:30 p.m., followed immediately by a reception. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Friends of the Moncton Hospital or a charity of your choice. For full obituary and online condolences, please visit: www.fergusonsfuneralhome.com
