Obituary for Isobel Peacock

Isobel Peacock (Johnson) was born in Port Elgin, New Brunswick on February 3, 1922 and died in Halifax, Nova Scotia on August 12, 2019. She lived in Oshawa, Ontario from 1950 to 1975 then in Bedford, Nova Scotia. She spent her last years at Parkland Clayton Park, where she was well-looked after by the wonderful staff.

Isobel was the youngest child of Leona Allen Johnson and David Edward Johnson and was predeceased by her siblings Ernest, Madeline, David, Douglas (Duke), Helen and Rod. She was the wife of one – Robert Trueman Peacock; the mother of four – Susan (Roger Hughes) David (Marjorie), Nancy (Stephen Kay), and Mary (Nigel Howcroft); the grandmother of six; and the great-grandmother of four.

She was “Issy” to the friends of her youth, who knew her as a lumber camp cook, keen dancer, terrible singer, and eager hockey player. Family legend has it that she tended goal for the Port Elgin Tommy Cods – an otherwise all-boy team. Somebody once said, admiringly, “If there’d been a fast crowd in Port Elgin, Issy would have been in it.”

Isobel and Robert married in 1946. He was her best friend and hero and came home for lunch every day.

Isobel made cookies, pickles, jam, candles; she even made her own glitter out of broken Christmas ornaments. Her babies had handmade smocked nighties and bassinettes decorated as if for minor European royalty. She sewed Easter and Christmas outfits for her girls and never missed a performance by one of her kids in a Christmas Pageant, school play, or concert. She was an enthusiastic amateur doctor, specializing in first aid, splinter removal and the diagnosis of spotty childhood diseases common in the middle of the 20th century. She grew her own vegetables.
