Obituary for Edward Smith

d. August 19, 2019

Edward Herbert Smith, 78, of Fredericton, NB, after a long battle with cancer, died peacefully at Hospice House with his wife of 57 years and family by his side. He was born September 15, 1940, in Fredericton Junction, NB to Leon and Amy (Hearne) Smith. Edward grew up in Beaverdam, NB, and like many of his generation in rural New Brunswick, he attended school at the one room schoolhouse before moving on to Sunbury West Regional High School. There he met Ann (MacDonald), and they married in 1962.
Edward (Ed) attended the University of New Brunswick (UNB) and graduated from the second ever class of Surveying Engineering in 1963. He became both a Professional Engineer and a New Brunswick Land Surveyor in 1965. His career included Department of Natural Resources, Sub-Surface Surveys, and later joined Associated Designers and Inspectors (ADI) in 1966, where he worked for 22 years. In 1988, he co-founded Geoplan Consultants, now part of WSP.
Professionally, in addition to serving on their many committees and Councils, Ed was President of the New Brunswick Land Surveyors (NBLS) in 1992, and the Association of Professional Engineers of New Brunswick (now APEGNB) in 1996. In recognition for his service to the Engineering Profession, in 2012 Ed received the CC Kirby Award, APEGNB’s highest honour, as well as the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. He also served as Chair of the APEGNB Foundation for Education for many years.
Ed was active in the community of Fredericton and believed in doing his part. For many years he was a member of the Fredericton YMCA and the “Men’s Health Club”. He directed four of the Y’s capital campaigns and was a member of its Board of Directors. He chaired fundraising for the Corporate Fund of the United Way, and a “Cancer Care Campaign” for the Chalmers Regional Hospital Foundation. He was a member of the Chalmers Regional Hospital Foundation Board of Directors from 1992- 2012. In addition, Ed was the City of Fredericton representative on the Board of the Fredericton Airport Authority for two terms. In recognition of his Community Service, Ed received APEGNB’s Citizenship Award.
One of Ed’s passions was flying. He was active in the Fredericton Flying Club and served as its President in 1971. He served as Atlantic Zone Director and later National Chairman of the Royal Canadian Flying Clubs Association and enjoyed travels with Ann to make many friends across the country.
One the places that Ed was fond of was the hunting camp Yoho Lodge in York County where his family had been hunting, fishing and cutting wood since the early 1900s. It was there the “the call of the wild” rekindled every fall and where Ed introduced his lifelong friends and classmates to this cherished annual get together and introduced many friends to this special camaraderie, including a second and now third generation. For well over fifty (50) years, many rousing stories, jokes, and political debates, and solving of the world’s problems occurred at the Lodge and around the dinner table.
Ed enjoyed his time every spring at the Granite Hill sugarbush. Along with all the “sapsuckers”, the gang took special pride in their high quality Maple Syrup that has been exported to many places around the globe, but no place as important as the tables of any grandchildren or their families.
Ed is survived by his wife, Ann; daughters Laureen Smith (Andrew) and Karen Robertson (Ian); son Brent (Kathy); 7 grandchildren, Adam and Ellery Smith, Hannah and Ewan Robertson, Joshua, Holly and Mary Smith; two sisters, Joan Moore (Dennis) and Norma McFarlane (Ira); 3 sisters-in-law, Marilyn Wishart (John), Sheryl Darrow (David), Leah MacDonald (Elmo); brother-in-law, The Rev. Dean MacDonald (Louise) plus several nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceded in death by his parents; nephew Leary Dean Moore; mother-in-law, Iris MacDonald; and brothers-in-law, Ira McFarlane and Elmo MacDonald.
The family will receive friends and relatives at McAdam’s Funeral Home, 160 York Street, Fredericton, NB, on Thursday, August 22 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held at Christ Church Cathedral, 803 Brunswick Street on Friday, August 23 at 3 pm. The Rev. Canon Tom Smith will officiate. Reception to follow in the Church Hall, 168 Church Street.
The family thanks the staff of the Oncology Department at the DECH and Hospice Fredericton for their care.
