Obituary for Gerhard Gloss

1926-2019
On Tuesday August 27, 2019 at age 93 Gerhard “Gerry” Gloss passed away with family by his side in Fredericton, NB. The youngest of three children, Gerry was born in Heilbronn, Germany on February 28, 1926.

He left behind friend and ex-wife Angela Gloss, son Heinz, daughter Mira and son-in-law Tony Galiani, and niece Sigrid Rein.

Predeceased by second wife Ursula Gloss, friend Mimi Knijpert, brother Heinz, sister Erna, and parents Gustav and Klara Gloss.

Growing up in prewar years in Heilbronn was challenging. Gerry wanted to become an artist but history had other plans, eventually landing him in the army at age 17. At 18 he became a prisoner of war in Belgium and later in England where he learned to speak English which helped him in his future life path.

After being released in 1948 he studied surveying in Stuttgart, Germany. He travelled to Canada where he had various surveying jobs, many involving surveying railroads across Ontario and Quebec. He then went to ITC in Delft, Holland to further his education in Aerial Surveying. He also met and married his first wife Angela (Beerens) Gloss.

They moved to Philadelphia where a US company had reserved him a job. Gerry then brought his skills to Fredericton, NB when he accepted a job at UNB’s newly formed Surveying Engineering Department. He eventually became a professor at UNB teaching for 30 years.

After retirement Gerry finally got the opportunity to follow his longtime passion for art enrolling at Mount Allison’s art program. He found a lot of enjoyment as he painted and drew for several decades.

His family will miss him very much, his humour, singing, excellent cooking, generosity and loving nature.

A visitation will take place at McAdam's Funeral Home on Friday, August 30, 2019, from 3 to 6 pm. A funeral service will be held at the J.A.McAdam Memorial Chapel on Saturday August 31, 2019, at 2 pm with an interment to folow at Forest Hill Cemetery. Online condolences may be made at www.mcadamsfh.com.
