Obituary for Jeanette Messer

It is with great sorrow that the family announces the death of Jeanette Christine Messer on August 31, 2019 in Fredericton, NB. Jeanette was born on October 1, 1925 at York Mills, NB, a daughter of the late Roy and Olive (Embleton) Piercy.

Jeanette grew up in York Mills and at a young age became a teacher during the war. She later worked at Briggs & Little Woolen Mill for 25 years. She married Alfred in 1945 and a year later they bought their farm overlooking Frog Lake in Harvey. She loved her life on the farm and remained there until the age of 91 years, even mowing her own lawn up until that time. Jeanette always had a vegetable garden and took great pride in her crop of potatoes. She enjoyed nature and every summer had many hummingbird feeders up, as well as many flowers. She certainly had a ‘green thumb’! Jeanette loved to listen to country music (particularly fiddle music) and rarely missed the country jamborees held in the communities around Harvey. Many games of “45’s” were played at her kitchen table followed always by a lunch with a cup of tea. She was noted for making the best potato scallop and biscuits and would often take them to potluck suppers. In the winter months, she always had a knitting or rug hooking project on the go.

Since December 2017, Jeanette has lived at Ste. Anne’s Court in Fredericton, where she was treated with kindness and compassion. Thank you to the staff there.

Jeanette is survived by her daughter, Diane Messer, Fredericton, NB; a sister-in-law, Ethel Piercy, York Mills, NB; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Alfred Messer and brothers, Eugene Piercy (late Doris) and Royden Piercy.

Family and friends are welcome to attend an informal gathering at Swan Funeral Chapel, 1826 Route 3, Harvey Station, NB on Thursday, September 5, 2019 from 2 to 4 pm to visit and share memories of Jeanette. A committal service will follow at Harvey Settlement Cemetery with Rev. Anne Boudreau and Rev. Basil Lowery officiating.

For those who wish to make a donation in memory of Jeanette, the family has suggested the Harvey Settlement Cemetery or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Mum – this is not goodbye, it is see you later. Thank you for your big heart and caring demeanor. I love you and will miss you every day forever. Until we meet again ...Diane
