Obituary for Ethel Smith

Ethel Smith, born February 8, 1930, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2019 at the Fredericton Hospice House.

The oldest child of the late Harry and Lillian Saunderson, she was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd Smith, sisters, Eileen and Lynn, and her son-in-law, Brian Jonsson.

She is survived by her brother, Harold (Claire), her daughters, Andrea (Kamran) and Lori, and her son, Harry (Cathy). She leaves behind three loving grandchildren, Amelia, Maddy and Erika. She will be missed by many nieces and nephews, especially Lois Wall.

Ethel loved Fredericton, her friends and the natural beauty of the community. She often spoke of her happy childhood growing up in a home full of music, dancing, and fun summers in Shediac. In 1951 she married Lloyd Smith, who shared her energy, and together they built a family, which Ethel referred to as the “centerpiece of her life.” Ethel passed on her passion for music and the outdoors to her children and they fondly remember the many special times, summers at the “camp” on the Saint John River with Mum as art director and naturalist, over the top Christmas celebrations, skiing at Crabbe, and skating on the river. There were annual trips to Sugarloaf, Magaguadavic Lake and PEI often with good family friends well remembered to this day.

A quiet volunteer, Ethel supported various community organizations from Brownies, Meals on Wheels, Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, Fredericton Community Kitchen and the YMCA (where she met another special group of friends). She enjoyed sharing her interior decorating skills, finding just the right item at an antique sale for a friend. She also worked behind the scenes to support her husband’s career and his numerous volunteer activities. She was a neighbour you could count on.

Ethel was elegant and had a strong sense of style and design. In early years she painted watercolours and modelled in several fashion shows. Truly interested in the culture of the city, she was a proud supporter of the Art Gallery and Playhouse. Ethel and Lloyd participated fully in the social life of Fredericton. Whether welcoming friends to George Street, Ravine Lodge, their summer home, or Colonial Heights, she loved to host parties and dinners with special themes, decorations and flowers as an outlet for her creativity.

There will be no visitation. A Celebration of Life will take place at Gallery 78, 796 Queen St.,Fredericton, on Saturday, November 2, 2019, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm.
