Obituary for Kathleen Cain

On Thanksgiving Monday, October 14 – Kaye died of brain cancer supported by her cherished family and the extraordinary medical staff of Upper River Valley Hospital. In the month between her diagnosis and her death, Kaye’s mind and wit stayed true to form and her room was filled with people, music and love - flowing both to her and from her.

Kaye Cain loved life, her family and animals. She loved God, King Cole tea, politics, sunshine, Wayne Gretzky, the colours of autumn, her friends and neighbors, music, Christmas and basketball.

Kaye was predeceased by her one true love of 50 years Clarence Cain and their only son Lee who died of cancer in 2012. Her daughters Anne (Wayne Prosser) Joy (Steven Whited) and Kelly (Darren Craswell) and all their children and grandchildren will forever be thankful for being raised by such a loving, strong and imaginative mother. Kaye also leaves behind her precious friend and sister in law Pearl Cain (Donald) and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who she loved and shared joy.

Kathleen Martha Giberson was born in Holmsville to Katie and Ralph Giberson on April 20, 1930. The youngest of the family, Katie and Ralph raised five other children Arnold (Alberta), John (Blanche), Marion (Wendell Cox), Loren (Bea), and Doris (Larry Boyer). All her siblings and their spouses predeceased Kaye as has her brother-in-law Donald Cain and sister-in-law Carolyn Lowrie.

Kaye married her husband Clarence Cain in 1947 and they lived a full and active life in Knoxford until shortly after Clarence’s death in 1997 where she relocated to Summerfield to take up residency in her very own mini home beside Anne and Wayne. Kaye eventually settled at Carleton Place which she made her final home and sense of community.

Kaye’s life In Knoxford was filled with both love and sorrow - from the serious life changing accident of Clarence’s to the financial trials and tribulations of farm life. She had extraordinary neighbors and was always ready to “put on a lunch’ for anyone who came to call. She lived life by seizing each and every day, giving rise to the Kaye Cain happiness program. From the time she turned 40 until her death in her 89th year- happiness she chose and happiness she shared.

Creativity oozed through her soul, love and humor danced from her lips and music flowed from her fingertips. Whether dressed in a costume performing a skit or inventing words or pet names for her many loved ones and treasures Kaye was simply one of a kind.

In midlife Kaye went to work at the Annie I. Lockhart home where she discovered her gift for working with the aged. Later in life Kaye enrolled in the Registered Nursing Assistant program through the New Brunswick Community College graduating in the class of 1980 at the age of 50. Kaye eventually went on to work at the Riverview Manor in Bath NB until she retired.

A Paul Harris Fellow, Kaye was active in the Women’s Institute, Eastern Star, Missionary Society and the Upper Knoxford United Baptist Church. Kaye also served as a Good Will Ambassador following her retirement.

Known for her loving and kind heart, Kaye could be seen delivering homemade bread and rolls up and down the Knoxford Road and all points in between. Her quick wit was passed on from her father Ralph and it was something that remained with her until she died. She was fiercely independent until the time of her death, remaining in control of her health care and funeral planning and her right to vote. At Kaye’s request she cast her final ballot from the privacy of her hospital room just days before her death. She was fortunate to have the love and support of her friend and neighbor Connie Holmes who was part of team Kaye right to the end.

There was no one quite like Kaye and those who have basked in the warmth of her love are all the richer for it. Whether she sent a note of encouragement or a little treat your way, if you were someone she knew she probably never forgot you. And although she may not forget every transgression, she had enormous capacity to forgive. Even Kawhi Leonard got a pass for leaving the Raptors.

Her family would like to thank all the family, friends, the staff and residents of Carleton a Place, and the many Upper River Valley health care professionals that helped her live a happy and fulfilled life to the very end.

May God bless you.

The family will welcome callers at the Giberson Funeral Home, Burnham Road, Florenceville, N.B. on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral will be held at the Giberson Funeral Home on Thursday, October 17 at 1:00 pm with a family burial to follow in Upper Knoxford Cemetery in the family burial plot. Friends and relatives and people who might just like to come “for the lunch” are welcome to join us at the Knoxford Praying Band Church following the funeral. Kaye would love it that we are all together.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Upper Knoxford United Baptist Church where the family attended church, Kaye played the piano and where she will be laid to rest beside her dear husband Clarence. www.gibersonfuneraldirectors.ca (506) 392-1115
