Obituary for Alcha McConnell

On Monday, November 11th, 45 days shy of her one hundredth birthday, Alcha Keith McConnell completed her earthly journey peacefully and surrounded by love at Serenacare, her home for the past four years. Alcha was the third daughter of William and Martha Keith. She was born on December 26, 1919 in Springhill, N.B.

Predeceased by her parents, three sisters - Eades Johnston, Ellen Cudmore, Agnes Spilman, her step-daughter Lois McConnell Black (2012), son-in-law Robert A. Black (2012), granddaughter Kimberley Black (2019) and her husband Norval Earl McConnell (1997).

Alcha is survived by her son Norval McConnell (Nancy), her daughter Katharine Paunins (Timothy), step-son David McConnell (Sandy), grandchildren - Kyle and Sara McConnell, Bob Black (Erin), Robert and Rich McConnell, great-grandchildren - Ben, Gabriella, Tessa, Molly and Anne who she loved spending time with at family functions, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Alcha attended Springhill and Havelock schools. She graduated from the Provincial Normal School and earned her B.A. degree from UNB. Alcha taught full time throughout the province of NB and one exchange year in Medicine Hat, Alberta. She became a stay-at-home mother and part-time teacher after her children were born, retiring in 1980.

Alcha was a long-time member of Wesley Memorial United church and their UCW group. Following Wesley’s closing she became a member of St. Paul’s United church in Riverview. She was a member of the Federation of University Women and the Retired Teachers’ Association.

Alcha was an avid gardener, preserver, knitter, reader, and bridge player. She was always thinking of others and loved sharing her time, produce and preserves with neighbours and friends. Alcha’s hand-knit mittens were well-loved by thousands of local schoolchildren. She demonstrated a wonderful moral compass and she lived by her words and actions each and every day.

The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to “Team Alcha” at Serenacare on Lady Russell Street. Your care, compassion, expertise and ability to create a beautiful, homey environment for mom was truly appreciated.

In accordance to Alcha’s wishes, there will be no visitation and a private family funeral will be held in the near future. Interment will be at Fair Haven Cemetery.

In memory of Alcha McConnell, a contribution to The Friends of the Moncton Hospital, University Women’s Club of Moncton Scholarship Fund, or a charity of the donor’s choice would be greatly appreciated.

Funeral and burial arrangements are under the direction of Fair Haven Funeral Home. www.fairhavenmemorial.ca
