Obituary for Ronald Alward

1942-2019

Ronald Nelson Alward, 77, of Riverside-Albert passed away peacefully on November 14th, 2019 at the Moncton Hospital with his loving family by his side.

Ron was born in Riverside-Albert on July 15, 1942 the son of the late Edgar and Blanche (Nelson) Alward.

Ron's family moved from Riverside-Albert in his younger years to Oshawa, Ontario where he grew up. He worked for GM and was involved with the Volunteer St John Ambulance Corps in the Oshawa area. He returned to Riverside-Albert with his own family in 1976 where he became very involved in the community. He owned and operated a gas bar and take-out, Maples Canteen, for over 25 years. He joined the Riverside-Albert Volunteer St. John Ambulance and was active for over 35 years in the service. After the volunteer division was done he went on to work for Maritime Emergency Medical Services as a driver. He was very proud and honoured to become a Serving Member of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem which represents "The brethren were bound by vows of charity, poverty and indissoluble brotherhood. and healed the sick, fed the needy, and exercised an unostentatious hospitality toward all." He also joined and served with the Riverside-Albert Volunteer Fire Department for 41 years. Ron was an asset to his community and was one to always respond to calls at any time of day or night. He was very dependable and you could always count on Ron to be there when needed. Ron was a proud member of NB Crime Stoppers and received a certificate for 32 years of dedicated service. When you look up the meaning of volunteer it sums up Ron to a tee " a person who freely offers to take part in an enterprise or undertake a task." Later in life he still kept going and worked traffic control as a flagger for various road construction and safety crews. If he was flagging in the area everyone would wave, smile or have a chat if time allowed, as he knew so many people. He loved his family very much and they were all a big part of his life. He has passed on his spirit, as both his boys are also volunteer firefighters. They will miss him greatly but know he is no longer in pain, and is at peace. Thanks for all you have done, you will never be forgotten.

He will be deeply missed by his best friend and wife of 53 years, Donna (Johnson) Alward; his sons, Steven Alward (Holly) of Port Elgin and Donald Alward (Heather) of Hillsborough; his treasured grandchildren, Rainy, Sam, Jonathan, and Ada; his brothers, Reg Alward (Rose) of Riverview and Ray Alward (Cam) of Oshawa. He will also be missed by his nieces, nephews and all his extended family and friends.

He will be resting at the Albert County Funeral Home with visitation on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The funeral service and Celebration of his life will be held at the Albert County Funeral Home on Monday, November 17th, 2019 at 1:00 pm with Rev. Dean MacDonald officiating. Emergency service members are invited to attend and will be forming an Honour Guard at the funeral home.

Immediately following the service the family will be meeting with relatives and friends for further sharing of memories and for refreshments. For anyone wishing to attend, interment will be in the Hopewell Cemetery, Hopewell Hill, NB following the reception.

Donations to the Riverside-Albert Volunteer Fire Department or to the charity of the donor's choice would be greatly appreciated by the family.

Arrangements are in the care of the Albert County Funeral Home, 4130 Route 114, Hopewell Cape, NB, E4H-3K2 734-2780
