Obituary for Alma Hazel

Alma Donalda Hazel (Crowley) passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on November 23rd, 2019 at Bobby’s Hospice in Saint John, NB. Born in Saint John in 1933, she was one of eight children of the late Daniel G. and Irene (Eily O’Toole) Crowley.

Gifted with a bright and lively disposition, Alma had a warm circle of friends and was involved as a volunteer in many community charitable organizations. She was a graduate of Mount Carmel Academy. After employment at the Bank of Nova Scotia and Fraser Brace Terminal Constructors, she became Depot Secretary of the Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service.

Following her marriage in 1956, Alma devoted her time to home and family. She became a popular travel-tour director on a part-time non-profit basis, conducting group tours to Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, Spain, Portugal, the Swiss Alps, European and North American destinations, as well as to Cuba, Bermuda and the Caribbean. All proceeds were donated to charitable organizations.

A member of Our Lady of the Assumption Parish in West Saint John, Alma was a devoted wife and mother but also found time to serve on numerous community organizations, including a term as president of the Saint John Irish-Canadian Cultural Association and Partridge Island Harbor and Heritage Inc., Community Concerts and Family Christian Movement, the CWL Holy Redeemer Parish and St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary.

Alma and Fred celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in July of 2016.

Besides her husband, Alma was predeceased by her parents, two sisters, Helen and Irene and one brother, Daniel.

She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Hazel of Saint John and Margaret Hazel of Ottawa; three brothers, John (Ruth) of Ontario, Arthur (Doreen) and William (Barbara), brother-in-law, Robert Quinlan, sister Rose Riley, sister-in-law, Constance Crowley, all of Saint John, sister-in-law, Joan Hazel of Ottawa; granddaughter, Christina Sfeir of Toronto, grandsons, Thomas MacKenzie (Sheena) of Saint John and Patrick Sfeir of Ottawa; great granddaughter, Lily MacKenzie of Saint John, as well as many nephews and nieces.

A special thank you to all family and friends, and to Dr. Kathy Keith for their loving support to mom and our family.

The family would like to give a special thank you to the Dr.’s especially Dr. Amy Groom and Dr. Farah Naz. The Nurses and staff at the Saint John Regional Oncology Dept. and the Extra Mural Nurses. To all the staff at Bobby’s Hospice for their care and compassion given to Mom. It was a loving and caring place for her in her final weeks. We will be forever grateful.

Castle Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Ave. Saint John, (506 634-1701) have been entrusted with the arrangements. Visitation will be held on Monday, November 25th, 2019 from 6 PM to 8 PM and Tuesday, November 26th, from 2 to 4 PM and 6 to 8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Our Lady of the Assumption, Wednesday, November 27th, at 12 noon. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, with a reception afterward at Castle Funeral Home.

Donations to the Fred Hazel Memorial Scholarship (St. Malachy’s Alumni Association), or Bobby’s Hospice would be appreciated by the family. Online condolences can be made at www. Castlefh.com
